Fans are excited for “Starfighter,” the first film set after the events of 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” Little is known about the galaxy at this time, as it takes place after the death of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver) and the fall of the First Order.

While speaking to PEOPLE magazine at the A Sense of Home NYC Gala, Levy joked, “I’m working on this small little niche art film called Star Wars, and that’ll be out next May.”

When asked for more details on how he plans to approach the film, Levy admitted he doesn’t think he “could make something that I’m not a fan of.”

“When I make a Marvel movie, I’m a Marvel fan making that movie. When I’m making Star Wars, I’m a fan making that movie,” he added.

Although little is known about the project so far, fans do know it will follow the story of a cynical pilot named Kade Auberon, played by “Project Hail Mary” star Ryan Gosling. He will be on a mission to protect a young boy, played by Flynn Gray. Rumors have long suggested that Gray’s character is Force-sensitive, possibly drawing Daisy Ridley’s Rey into the project, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Levy had nothing but high praise for working with Gosling. “Some actors are great muses, right? Some actors are just amazing on screen, and you’re inspired telling that story. The thing about Gosling is he’s a great muse, and he’s inspiring, but he’s also a great partner,” he told PEOPLE magazine back in August.

“He thinks like a full spectrum creative,” Levy continued. “He’s an artist. He’s an incredible actor, but he’s also thinking about the lighting, the fabric on the wall. He’s noticing everything.”

Gosling also serves as a producer on the film, alongside former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who stepped down in January.

Although fans praised the darker approach the Emmy-award-winning series “Andor” took to a galaxy far, far away, Levy told the publication he really likes to make movies the whole family can enjoy together.

“I sort of came up making movies that were family films, right?” he said, citing his past work on “Cheaper by the Dozen” and “Night at the Museum.”

“I love making stories about and for families. I like creating entertainment that brings people together and brings families together,” he added. Levy and his wife, Serena, have four daughters.

While speaking to Fandango in August, Levy revealed that Lucasfilm initially approached him to create a movie set after the events of 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” which was not well received by fans.

“When I was invited by Kathleen Kennedy and the folks at Lucasfilm, they said ‘We want to now take Star Wars to the future – so let’s come up with [a film that honors what came before] but is new, with new characters and a new adventure,’” he recalled. “And so I just started creating this story and [the character of protagonist Kade Auberon], but it really sort of came together and became deeply exciting once Ryan Gosling [got involved].”

“Flynn Gray, who has never been in a movie… Is this phenomenal young actor [who] had that naturalism. The camera adores him, [and] because the movie is both warm-hearted and funny, it was a hard thing to find a younger actor who could do both – the spectrum of feelings and tones that Starfighter needed,” he continued. “I knew it when I met Flynn, but I really knew it when I had Flynn and Ryan in the room together because their chemistry was so effortless.”

‘Starfighter’ Will Explore Characters ‘On The Wrong Side of the Galaxy’

In the same interview, Levy revealed that he got to “play around and explore” what the galaxy looked like after the Battle of Exegol, when Emperor Palpatine and the First Order were finally defeated. The galaxy far, far away seems to still be recovering, with no single governing body in charge.

“It’s a period of time that’s never been onscreen in any Star Wars story, and so to create that, to play around and explore what is the future of the galaxy was incredibly fun,” Levy said. “Our characters in Starfighter are on the wrong side of the galaxy. It’s about these sort of marginalized outsiders who find each other and have a shot at discovering heroism through their connections.”

“It was just something very kind of blue-collar, working-class, grounded and textured and real to [Francis Ford Copolla’s The Outsiders] that we tried to bring to Star Wars,” he continued, noting that the characters are just “doing the best they can in a chaotic galaxy that hasn’t been explored.”

“Star Wars: Starfighter” is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
