Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos have joined forces to launch the Phoenix Species Project, a landmark $200 million initiative to save hundreds of the world’s most critically endangered species from extinction.

The actor said in a statement that the fund has the potential to “drastically shift” how conservation and the climate crisis are generally approached.

Aside from the charity initiative, Bezos is said to have entered into an agreement to buy a stake in English Premier League side Liverpool FC.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos recently launched the Phoenix Species Project, a new philanthropic initiative focused on protecting and recovering endangered species globally.

The investment vehicle, worth a whopping $200 million commitment, was launched through their respective conservation organizations, Re and the Bezos Earth Fund.

The effort represents the largest single philanthropic commitment in history dedicated exclusively to the recovery of threatened wildlife.

Half of the funding ($100 million) is provided by the Bezos Earth Fund, with the remaining $100 million backed by DiCaprio, Re, and partner organizations, including Age of Union and the Todd Graves Family Foundation.

Unlike traditional conservation programs that fund broad regional ecosystems, the Phoenix Species Project focuses on species on the immediate brink of disappearance.

Operating across several different countries in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission, the fund provides the long-term, multi-year financial runway needed to achieve such an audacious goal.

The target list spans 100 of the most threatened species, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, invertebrates, and plants.

“For decades, scientists, Indigenous Peoples, local communities and conservation leaders have been on the front lines of protecting nature, and what has been made clear through research is that species on the brink of extinction are often the ones that anchor some of the world’s most important ecosystems,” DiCaprio said in a statement. “When we protect those species, we also protect the forests, wetlands, grasslands and oceans they depend on.”

The Titanic star went further to note that the investment could change the way conservation efforts are approached, adding that they have a global outlook to making an impact where it’s most needed.

“The Phoenix Species Project has the potential to drastically shift how we approach conservation and combat the climate crisis at a global scale,” DiCaprio continued.

“By creating the largest philanthropic initiative in history dedicated to the recovery of critically endangered species across continents, made possible by a transformative gift from the Bezos Earth Fund, we have an opportunity to make a lasting impact where it’s needed most,” he added. “The goal is for the Phoenix Species Project to become a global movement that inspires others to invest in nature and help protect our planet.”

Lauren Sanchez Reveals How The Initiative Is Different

The project stems from five years of collaboration, sparked during a 2021 meeting between DiCaprio, Re CEO Dr. Wes Sechrest, Jeff Bezos, and Bezos Earth Fund Vice Chair Lauren Sánchez Bezos, per The Economic Times.

Sánchez also spoke about the effort in a statement, expressing that they’re pursuing a lofty goal of bringing back those species rather than just managing their decline.

“Kids fall in love with animals before anyone tells them those animals are disappearing,” she said in her statement. “Ask any seven-year-old about their favorite creature. It’s something wild. Something most adults have never heard of.”

“What do we tell them when the night parrot or the golden-crowned sifaka isn’t there anymore to fall in love with? This project is our answer,” she continued. “One hundred species, thirty countries, and a real commitment to bringing them back. Not managing their decline. Recovering them. That’s the whole difference. We know how to do this. We just have to stay committed long enough to see it through.”

Aside from funding conservation initiatives, Bezos has recently finalized a deal that’ll see him own a stake in English football club Liverpool FC.

The deal is fostered by investment group 1892 Holdings, led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.

It also includes Eduardo Saverin, one of Facebook’s co-founders, and will see the trio acquire 30% of the football club.

According to the New York Times, Fenway Sports Group, the team’s majority owner, announced Friday, with a source noting that the investment firm values the club at about $7 billion.

“Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club’s long-term interests in mind,” Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group, said in a statement.

“As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special,” he added.
