Sandra Bullock has candidly opened up about starting out in the acting industry, calling out ‘every pervert’ in auditions.
The Hollywood star began acting in the late 1980s and quickly began landing parts in films, before getting her big break in 1994’s Speed.
Reflecting on her work in an interview with fellow actress Jennifer Aniston, Bullock, 62, revealed she’d had to make some difficult decisions about the direction of her career.
Aniston asked if there had ever been a moment she she ‘made a deliberate choice’ about the kind of career she wanted, Sandra came up with two examples.

“I was in New York, I was a waitress, I was auditioning for every pervert that existed asking me to drop my pants. I was like, ‘Nope, not the role for me’,” she said, referring to the very early days of her career.
She added: “I was working my way up. Every working actor thinks you will never work again so you just take what you can get and make the most of it.”
The second example was after Bullock had hit the big time.
“The only time I was intentional about my career was when I said, ‘I need to stop right now with the rom-coms,’ because I was getting so much sh** for them.
“And I took a role in this film called Crash. I wanted to start flexing other muscles,” she told Aniston, who was interviewing Bullock for Interview magazine.
For much of her early career, Bullock was a rom-com regular, with performances in films like While You Were Sleeping and Two If by Sea.
She gained further popularity with her starring roles in Miss Congeniality and Two Weeks Notice in the early 2000s, but after this she stepped away from films for two years.
2004’s Crash catapulted her back into the spotlight and marked a turning point in her career, as she began to move away from rom-coms.

Aniston noted that making such a decision must have felt ‘very risky’ and noted that the industry tends to look down on comedies, but they’re ‘not as easy as they look’.
“Now more than ever, I miss that. I want to do nothing but that now,” Bullock said, reflecting on the last two decades of her acting career.
Bullock’s latest project is the recently released Practical Magic 2, which marks her first film in four years, following the release of 2022’s Bullet Train.
