Dwayne Johnson has shared a recipe that he has after working out, and it takes things to a different level from a regular protein shake.

For people trying to build muscle having a bit of extra protein can be a helpful part of their workout.

But while a lot of people might use a protein bar or a shake to help get that extra protein, Johnson takes things to a different level entirely, as you might expect for the movie star and former WWE wrestler.

While some of the ingredients make sense, such as protein powder and creatine, the unusual recipe also includes some ingredients that you might not normally expect to find in a protein shake, such as rice.

The idea is that the recipe will help to support workouts by preserving muscle as well as supporting fat loss.

In a post shared to his Instagram page, he said: “I’ll eat a real food meal 2-3 hours later, pending my work schedule.

“Taking in roughly 4,000 calories per day. Holding conditioning and lean quality tissue very nicely with these macros. If I’m not sharp with my macros, at 6ft 4in, I can easily start to look stringy and that ain’t cute look.

“Current weight 236lbs (107kg). Best I’ve ever felt.”

The full recipe includes 70g protein powder, 10-15g creatine, 140-150g frozen blueberries, 120g rice, a litre of water, ice, and stevia, which is a sweetener.

The idea is that it has three things which are important in recovery after working out, which are fluids, protein, and carbs.

Speaking about the rice, he said: “I really like it, it adds a great texture to the shake.”

It might seem like an unusual step to try mixing rice into a protein shake, but eating, or drinking, carbs after a workout can be useful for replenishing muscle glycogen, which is at low levels after a difficult workout session.

If you do that then it helps to keep up the energy levels for your session at the gym as well, which is especially true if you plan to have another session in the next day.

And there’s also research which suggests that combining protein with carbs after a workout is a good way to help with your recovery.

That’s because this may support recouping those glycogen stores we mentioned earlier, while also helping to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.

This research had lower levels than what Johnson has in his recipe which he shared in the Instagram video, however every person is a bit different and it may be useful to try things out and see what works best for you.

Then we get into the fruit element of the shake, with the blueberries also being good for you in that they contain some compounds which may help after a big exercise session.

There’s even been a study which examined the impact that blueberries can have if you eat them both after exercise, as well as before getting into the gym as well.

Of course, including water is also a good idea for a bit of hydration as well, and then there’s the creatine which Johnson has at a higher level than the general recommended dose of 5g, though again this may vary from person to person.

So while it might seem a bit unusual reading through the recipe, the drink is designed to help support Johnson in several ways after working out.
