In a twist worthy of a cinematic plot, it seems the long-gestating Escape from New York reboot might finally be pickin’ up some steam! Ignoring the astrological warnings of retrograde, StudioCanal and The Picture Company are joining forces to reimagine John Carpenter’s iconic 1981 flick. Initially, the announcement felt more like another “development hell” tale in Hollywood’s storied saga of studio projects than anything significant. But wait—hold the phone! The Hollywood Reporter has dropped a bombshell: Zack Snyder, known for his visually stunning adaptations, is set to write and direct the new version. With Snyder on board, we can only wonder if this remake will rise from the ashes like the phoenix—or, you know, get lost in the chaos of development hell… again! Either way, it’s shaping up to be quite the rollercoaster. What are your thoughts? Could this mean a fresh adventure for Snake Plissken, or will it be just another installment in the “better left untouched” category? LEARN MORE
A couple of months ago, StudioCanal announced that they were teaming with The Picture Company to develop a reimagining of John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi action classic Escape from New York… which didn’t really seem like substantial news at the time, since a new version of Escape from New York has been weaving its way in and out of developing at various companies since 2007. Now, we have a substantial update to share, as The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Zack Snyder – whose credits include 300, Watchmen, a trilogy of films in the DC Extended Universe, and the Dawn of the Dead remake – has signed on to write and direct the Escape from New York remake for StudioCanal and The Picture Company.
The package will be taken out to studios and streamers in the coming weeks, but the folks behind the scenes are hoping to score a theatrical release for this one.
Scripted by Carpenter and Nick Castle, Escape from New York has the following description: In a world ravaged by crime, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a walled prison where brutal prisoners roam. But when the US president crash-lands inside, only one man can bring him back: notorious outlaw and former Special Forces war hero Snake Plissken. But time is short. In 24 hours, an explosive device implanted in his neck will end Snake’s mission – and his life – unless he succeeds!
The film stars Kurt Russell, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau, Harry Dean Stanton, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Van Cleef, Tom Atkins, Charles Cyphers, Frank Doubleday, John Strobel, Season Hubley, Nancy Stephens, George Buck Flower, and Ox Baker, with some narration by Jamie Lee Curtis.
Snyder’s take on the concept has not been revealed. He will be producing the film with his Stone Quarry production company partners Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller. Carpenter is also involved with update, serving as executive producer. The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman produce through their overall deal with StudioCanal, which controls the underlying rights to the property with Carpenter.
As mentioned, an Escape from New York remake has been in the cards since 2007. That’s when New Line Cinema won the rights and got the project set up with Len Wiseman (Underworld) on board to direct, with Ken Nolan writing the screenplay and Gerard Butler signed on to play Snake Plissken. Wiseman was later replaced by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), who also ended up stepping away. Breck Eisner (Sahara) was up for the directing job and David Kajganich and Allan Loeb were rewriting the script, but New Line Cinema dropped the project in 2011.
Fox and The Picture Company picked it up in 2015 and hired Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn) to direct. Neil Cross wrote a script, but that iteration of the project didn’t make it into production, either. Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man) was hired to write and possibly direct the film in 2019. That didn’t happen. Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream VI) were hired to direct in 2022, and they were planning to make their Escape from New York a “requel” rather than a remake.
Then Radio Silence drifted away. StudioCanal came into the picture. Now… will Zack Snyder’s Escape from New York remake make it into production? We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, share your thoughts on this news by leaving a comment below.
