In a Variety profile published Wednesday, Davidson addressed the commentary surrounding Grande and the pressure it has placed on the singer. “I don’t like it at all,” he said.
The “Saturday Night Live” alum then expanded on his frustration, drawing on what he knows of Grande personally. “It’s not cool,” he continued. “She’s a really strong person. I’ve witnessed it, and I don’t understand it. She knows how to handle this stuff, though. She’s been around. So she’ll be OK, but I think it’s f-cked up.”
In August, Grande’s representative announced that she would be “taking a step back from visibility” amid “endless, ongoing” concern about her weight. Grande also addressed the emotional toll during a four-minute speech to “Eternal Sunshine” tour attendees in Chicago, saying online “negativity is ruining things for” her.
Still, she emphasized the connection she felt with the people in the room. “No matter what noises exist out there, nothing will be able to distort my reality or be more real to me … as this love that we share.”
Grande wrapped her “Eternal Sunshine” tour on September 1 and has since been keeping a lower profile. According to Page Six’s reporting on her life in Los Angeles, she has been “laying low” and “enjoying her downtime” with boyfriend Ricky Alvarez. “Ariana is doing great,” a source shared with the outlet. “She’s in an amazing place. She’s really happy. Ricky’s family is there and she loves Halloween things, so she’s getting into the season.”
A different source told PEOPLE that the two are “taking things very slowly.”
“Ariana has always considered Ricky a friend,” the insider said. “She’s not held ill will against him [since their split]. Ricky is dependable, trustworthy and very supportive. Ariana feels she can be herself around Ricky.”

Davidson’s defense of Grande does not mean the former couple is regularly communicating. Asked about their current relationship, he offered a straightforward answer. “We’re not texting or whatever, but we’re cool,” he admitted.
