After a long hiatus, My Life With the Walter Boys Season 3 finally returned, and the new season was surprisingly refreshing. MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD…
For two years, Jackie’s love life has centered around her inability to choose between Cole and Alex, and that was getting old, but this time we didn’t exactly get more of the same.
Alex was spun off into his own, way more interesting story, while Jackie again found herself torn, leading to a storyline that was equally entertaining and infuriating. But at least it wasn’t the same old thing!
Jackie started to figure out who she was without her late family during the previous season, and that definitely continued on My Life With the Walter Boys Season 3.
I loved that Elliot represented everything she’d left behind, while Cole was the life she had chosen in Silver Falls — and that the normally overachieving Jackie questioned whether she wanted the kind of life Elliot and Richard were pushing her toward.
I only wish that Jackie had discovered a happy medium by the end.
She was right that she needs to be who she is and not try to be the perfect girl who never has a moment of immaturity, but that didn’t mean she needed to skip class or not care about school at all.
She came to that conclusion, not because she believed it, but because Cole was manipulated into breaking up with her, and her way of dealing with it was to throw herself into a million activities so that she wouldn’t think about how broken-hearted she was.
That was irritating, and so was that stupid and predictable Cole accident cliffhanger at the end of the season.
As soon as Cole decided not to race and to go see Jackie instead, I knew something would happen.
It’s especially cruel for it to involve a car crash, considering that Jackie already lost her parents and sister in a car accident, and it felt like it was thrown into the last five minutes to create a reason to tune in when My Life With The Walter Boys Season 4 premieres.
I wanted to like Elliot.
He was smart, handsome, a little awkward, and best of all, not part of Jackie’s adopted family.
That weird conversation where Katherine and George clearly were treating Jackie like an adopted daughter while lecturing the kids about not dating people your brothers have dated was incredibly uncomfortable!
But Elliot was too quick to jump on the bandwagon of telling Cole he was a loser who was destroying Jackie’s life, and that made him hard to like.
It might have worked if it was clearer that Elliot was acting as Richard’s mouthpiece because he, too, was hiding who he really was.
There were a few moments that suggested it, like Elliot admitting he loved Silver Falls shortly before telling Jackie her destiny was elsewhere, but not nearly enough.
Elliot came off as jealous of Cole and determined to destroy Cole and Jackie’s relationship so he could have Jackie for himself, which didn’t look good for him.
I absolutely hate one-sided triangles where it’s obvious who we’re supposed to root for.
I’ve never been impressed with either Cole or Alex, so I was excited for new blood who might actually be the right fit for Jackie, but Elliot and Richard were so cruel that I ended up rooting for Cole!
It wasn’t necessarily that I wanted him with Jackie, but I wanted him to know the toxic BS being spewed his way about how he was a horrible person who was dragging Jackie down was a lie.
And sadly, Cole never quite got there, though Katherine and George finally got it through his head that Elliot wasn’t so superior to him.
The “arrest” that set Richard off was one of the most contrived parts of My Life With the Walter Boys Season 3, too.
It didn’t even make sense that Jackie was arrested. She wasn’t doing anything except telling Cole to stop fighting.
And it made even less sense that Cole, Alex, and Jackie were bundled into the back of the same cop car, left unsupervised, and allowed to talk.
That wasn’t an arrest at all. It was an excuse for Richard to be angry and constantly insist that Jackie was turning into someone who “gets arrested” while everyone kept telling him that wasn’t what happened.
Richard was insufferable, but part of the problem was this set-up.
If Jackie had actually been taken to the police station and processed, even if she was released. to Katherine and George without charges, then Richard’s fear would be more understandable.
But his response felt like a massive overreaction, and it was ridiculous that Katherine and George allowed him to take Jackie for a week as “punishment.”
It was equally ridiculous that at the banquet, he tried to stop her from telling the college admissions coach about a major community event she was organizing — aka the kind of thing that college recruiters love to see.
I cheered when Jackie told him off, and again when she told Elliot off, which made it doubly annoying that Cole so easily fell for the BS and then spent most of the rest of the season self-destructing.
Also, that haunted house episode was just weird and didn’t add anything. I love a good Halloween-themed episode, but this wasn’t it.
Although Jackie’s struggles were central, as they should be, one of the best things My Life With The Walter Boys did was give strong subplots to almost all the characters.
The adult subplots were a bit rushed.
Hannah was quickly written out after being dropped into the Walters’ life without warning, which was disappointing, and George’s health issues were only a minor blip on the family’s radar.
But Alex had some good stories for once, especially his attraction to Kylie (even if it did end with that oh-so-typical discovery that he was too late to share his real feelings!) and his trouble fitting in with a bunch of rodeo cowboys that weren’t worth his time.
Blake and her decision to support Wylder’s lies about Alex because Wylder wins competitions made me regret shipping her and Alex during My Life With the Walter Boys Season 2.
Danny and Erin’s drunken proposal story was a bit on the silly side — although their difficulty with a long-distance relationship should be interesting once Danny goes to Carnegie-Mellon.
