Minnesota Vikings player JJ McCarthy is “disappointed” he lost the starting quarterback spot to veteran player Kyler Murray. Speaking with reporters earlier this week, the University of Michigan alum said that although he didn’t get the outcome he wanted, he still planned to show up every day and work hard for the day he is needed.

People assumed McCarthy would be the Vikings’ starting QB for the year before they signed Kyler Murray to a one-year deal in March 2026. Over the summer, eyes were on them both as training camp started to see who would emerge victorious. While McCarthy lost out this time, he said that wouldn’t throw him off his path.
“A decision was made that was out of my control,” he said on Wednesday, August 12. “And obviously every competitor wants to play, but moving forward it’s just about continuing to work hard and just staying ready for when my number’s called.”
McCarthy elaborated when pressed to share why he believed things were outside his control.
“There’s so many things out of my control, like the heat today. And it’s just really having the discernment to figure out which of the two [quarterbacks], and that was one of the things outside of my control. And me attacking and optimizing every opportunity, which was in my control, and that’s all I was focusing on,” he said.
Even then, McCarthy said he’s certain he wants to be part of the Minnesota Vikings. “This is the place I want to be,” he assured reporters. “And I love every single person in this building. I love the state. I love the fanbase. And I’m going to continue to just do whatever I can for this team and this organization.”

One reason the Vikings’ starting QB reveal was such a big deal is that, over the summer, McCarthy implied he didn’t have much of a relationship with Murray.
“It’s just like two guys in a classroom,” he said, per The Blast. “He sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach us and coach us.”

Murray, meanwhile, said he enjoyed playing alongside McCarthy. “Obviously, I know he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him. I’ve played seven years now, going onto eight. So, I’m considered a veteran even though I don’t see myself as that. Give him any knowledge that he needs. Again, we’re both competitors, and I know we both want what’s best for the team,” he shared.
McCarthy’s comments took some people by surprise, prompting notable figures, like Shannon Sharpe, to share their perspective.
Sharpe said on his “Nightcap” podcast that McCarthy should blame himself only. “It’s his fault. Had you played better, Kyler Murray’s services would not have been needed,” he said. “The mere fact that they got Kyler Murray in there tells you everything you need to know, J.J. McCarthy.”
Sharpe didn’t stop there. He added, “Your play brought this on, and guess where you’re going to be? He is going to be on the field; you’re going to be sitting on the bench.”
But not everybody was as harsh as the 3x Super Bowl champ. Sharpe’s co-host, Chad Johnson, said that he was willing to give McCarthy a bit more grace, adding that he’s still learning how to interact with the media.
“He’s not savvy just yet,” Johnson said. “You can tell he hasn’t been prepped in the right way to answer questions when it comes to players inside that locker room, especially one that you’re competing against.”
