Are we ready to dive back into the curious world of Westmont Village? Sure we are!

Your Friends and Neighbors Season 2 Episode 1 began with Coop and Mel on vacation with the family. “We’re here until we’re not,” is Coop’s vacation philosophy, and maybe his current life philosophy in general.

He’s pretty impressed with the evolution of their relationship and believes there will be more vacations just like this.

They’re 50, and if the last year has proven anything, it’s how easy it is to lose everything with a simple misunderstanding.

But life is full of misunderstandings. It’s something we excel at, a habit we strive to correct, but never quite catch the hang of it.

Coop and Mel’s relationship and its destruction were built on them. And frankly, almost every disagreement I’ve ever had was too.

For Coop and Mel, things were going really well until they weren’t, and the argument they had to end the vacation showed why they’ll never be together again, except for possibly falling into bed together here and there if the moment moves them.

That night, it didn’t move Mel, who was insulted that Coop figured he’d have gotten laid already if he wanted to. Whether he was talking about the woman who had been eyeing him or Mel doesn’t matter.

Mel read it as him believing he could still have her whenever he wanted, and that’s nothing anyone wants to believe about themselves.

They’re both onto new chapters in their lives, but closing the book on their marriage will never happen. They have a family, and even if their kids are grown, they’ll always be a part of each other’s lives.

After being arrested and exonerated for murder during Your Friends & Neighbors Season 1, Coop is reaping unexpected rewards. Samantha hasn’t earned the same social cache for her misdeeds, but that’s not going to stop Coop from enjoying his newfound happiness.

Of course, that was before Owen Ashe blew into Westmont Village in his brilliant blue, incredibly expensive sports car.

The first house he looked at was Sam’s, and after Ashe got done insulting her for her taste in minuscule mansions, she revealed who she really was, and he was pretty turned on by her “dangerous” side.

It’s just what she needed to get her feet back under her. There’s nothing like the hot, new guy in town taking you under his wing to take flight again.

Yet she was uncomfortable at Ashe’s party and left early. What I don’t get is why she’s peeved at Coop when he should be the one peeved.

He was truly happy to hear she had sold the house and landed a significant commission, so he was surprised at her reaction to bumping into him. She’s the one who set him up for murder, but she’s sulking around as if someone did it to her.

Which, granted, her husband did by killing himself. But it wasn’t Coop’s fault.

It will be interesting to see where Sam’s involvement with Ashe takes her. I just hope it doesn’t lead to another downward spiral.

Tori was a spitfire during Your Friends & Neighbors Season 1, but she’s reaching new heights this season.

That was apparent when she laid the Princeton admissions fella flat on his ass with her assessment of the enrollment system devised to accept any legacy student, deserving or not.

To keep that young woman on her particular path, Coop needs to keep up with the Joneses, and since he’s chosen a new line of work, that means a lot of robberies.

To that end, he’s still working with Elena and taking from the wealthy what they discard as if it were trash.

And for us, we continue to get a sales-esque rundown of the ridiculous items he scores that are lying about the homes of wealthy folks as if they couldn’t feed several families for years.

A $165k Mont Blanc pen in a “junk drawer” of similar pens is disgusting. Maybe as disgusting as the fact that someone would charge that amount for a pen, and someone else would buy it.

But truly, the artificial pricing on such items just adds more wealth for the wealthy. It’s like a pyramid scheme of inflated prices that keeps them on top and the rest of us down. Why aren’t more of us taking cues from Coop?

OK, I’m kidding. Clearly.

I loved Barney’s reaction to Coop’s new direction. Despite hearing that his friend is a thief and that their shooting was likely tied to Coop’s midlife crisis, he didn’t disown his friend.

And it seemed like, once he got used to the idea, he might even support it. Grace’s dad sure isn’t impressed with his life choices. Talk about an awkward conversation.

But he was also offering Barney a lifeline, a job at his company. Something tells me that getting on board with Coop’s criminal enterprise might be less humiliating.

It even ruined what could have been a pretty sexy night with Grace, which instead ended with Barney criticizing the way she touched him.

But when he learned she was pregnant, that was the push he needed to join forces with Coop.

Was I supposed to know who Mel was having dinner with and making out with in the front seat of a car like a teenager? I didn’t, but knowing him wasn’t the point.

She stopped that sexy play right in the middle of it, as if she finally realized what she was doing. She claimed illness, but that’s not what it was.

From the outside, it looked like a pretty good date, but when she got home, Mel told Tori she was thinking of hanging up dating altogether. It was a flippant answer and could have meant nothing, but she was actually reeling from her body betraying her.

So what was it? Peri-menopause. People don’t often talk about it, but it can be as debilitating for women as it is for men when they need their little blue pill.

You think you’re going to get it on, only to discover the area has turned into the Serengeti, blocking entry to outside forces. If you will.

Our society tends to punish women for getting older and reward men with helpful solutions like Viagra as men age. I love that YFaN is going there, and I hope to see more of it in the future. I’ve had that very experience that Mel did, and let me tell you, it’s a bummer. TMI? Too bad. Might as well lead the charge.

The idea of Coop learning of her struggles worried Mel, but he’s feeling his own age creeping up on him.

We just don’t like to discuss any of it, so instead of understanding each other (the sexes, in general, that is), we think everyone but us is having a great time. The key is to put on a brave face so everyone thinks you’re enjoying yourself. Suffer in silence. What a crock!

I don’t know how much of that storyline will carry on throughout the season, but I hope we dive into it a bit more. It’s as important as bringing on a new character.

So what’s the deal with Ashe? He welcomed Coop to his housewarming party, and they seemed to be on the same wavelength, allowing life’s little thrills (like being arrested for murder) to put a spring in their step.

He’s got a daughter who will probably land in Tori’s orbit, and he’s incredibly charming. Because of course he is. James Marsden is the shit these days, and it’s well deserved.

Ashe’s so damn effervescent, and the vagueness of the “import-export” business always sets off red flags for me. Has that ever meant anything other than a criminal mastermind?

(Courtesy of Apple TV)

But damn, who could resist the guy? Grown adults plummeting into the pool fully dressed when the night should be ending is a good indication that he’s going to quickly become a treasured member of the community.

Or will he?

Coop’s momentary lapse of common sense as he took in the festive mayhem around him, taking a second to believe things were looking up, will definitely be overshadowed by Ashe’s arrival.

If he is a crime lord (and really, even if he isn’t), it’s not too hard to see the writing on the wall that his introduction is going to drag down Coop in one way or another.

What’s the point of all of this if Coop isn’t continuously challenged to reconsider his options?

(Courtesy of Apple TV)

I mean, you have to agree with Coop. Being middle-aged sucks.

And like Mel said on vacation, you think that by a certain age, you’d have it all together. You’d know your direction and be taking the final curve toward your destination, not floundering around again.

So who can blame anyone for grasping for the golden ring in whatever way they can?

I’m excited for a new adventure and to see more of the Cooper family’s ups and downs. What about you? Hit the comments and share your thoughts about the premiere!
