Angel Reese and Rhyne Howard set new records during last night’s game against the Toronto Tempo. The Dream’s latest win comes amid the team’s final stretch of games. Their performance in the last 12 games against top contenders, such as the Indiana Fever, Las Vegas Aces, and the Minnesota Lynx.
Reese is known for being the double-double queen, earning the nickname during her time at LSU. She only reinforced the nickname during her rookie season with the Chicago Sky, breaking the WNBA record for the most consecutive games with a double-double at 15.
Last night, Reese recorded her 22nd double-double of the season, breaking the Dream’s all-time single-season record. She finished the night with 20 points and 14 rebounds and currently leads the WNBA in double-doubles this season.
Howard, meanwhile, became the fastest player in WNBA history to record 100 made three-pointers in a season, doing so in just 31 games. She ended the contest with 22 points, going six-of-11 from the field.
The Dream scored 107 points last night versus the 10-22 Tempo. Several of the Dream players were in double digits, including Jordin Canada, who added 20 to the box score, while Allisha Gray and Brionna Jones had 15 apiece.
The Dream are coming along nicely after a shaky five-game losing streak earlier in the season. At the time, Reese said that she wasn’t worried about her team’s performance down the stretch, saying that the highs and lows are part of the game.
“We have 5 games going into All-Star, and any team in front of us should be scared because we’re ready, and we’re gonna continue to put our foot forward every day, watch film, get together and figure ourselves out,” she said. “Adversity builds character in the locker room, having tough conversations, taking accountability for things and figuring it out.”
Last night, she spoke with the media and touched on those ebbs and flows, noting that they always find a way to stick together. “I’m proud of our team, proud of the girls, and proud of the city for always coming out and supporting us,” she said.
During last night’s game, the Dream tied their season high with 14 made three-pointers. Jones, who previously rejoined the team after coming back from an injury she suffered overseas, helped the team’s offensive efficiency and spoke with the media about playing with Reese, describing it as “easy.”
“Our ball movement and our ability to play off each other, I think we’re continuing to get better at that,” she said. “Playing with Angel makes it so easy. Having that inside-outside dynamic, I can find her in the post, she can find me in the post. I know when she’s posting up down there, I’m gonna find her.”
The recent records aren’t the only milestones that Reese and Howard have to celebrate this WNBA season. According to The Blast, the two recently became the first Dream duo to be named to Team USA.
The roster, which also includes Caitlin Clark, A’ja Wilson, Paige Bueckers, and more, will compete in the FIBA World Cup in Germany in just a few weeks.
“So thankful to represent USA and compete alongside my Rhy for a gold medal. Such an honor, and I’m beyond grateful for this opportunity. Let’s go!!” Reese said about the special moment on her social media account.
Her position on Team USA is hopefully just the beginning for the 24-year-old, who previously told the media that her ultimate goal is to be named to the Olympic roster in 2028.
“I mean, that’s a big goal for me. So just continuing to take these small steps and continue to learn and grow,” she said.
A few weeks ago, Reese completed an All-Star press tour after releasing her Signature Barbie doll with Mattel. The collectible comes equipped with a matching pink jersey and the baller’s signature AR1 Reeboks.
“I always wanted to have a Barbie doll,” Reese said about the special moment, per The Blast.
In college, Reese was called the “Bayou Barbie,” and when she was younger, she had a solid collection of them. Those memories made her latest milestone even more special. “It’s really cool to see my vision come to life,” she said.
