Critic’s Rating: 4.8 / 5.0

Matlock’s Welbrexa investigations and silly subterfuge plots are hard to take.

Each one is more ridiculous than the last, and half the time I lose track of exactly what everyone is trying to accomplish with convoluted undercover plans.

Matlock Season 2 Episode 15 was more of the same, but it didn’t bother me as much as usual because of the authenticity of its other subplot.

Matlock Season 2 Episode 15 Again Explored The Heartbreaking Reality of Addiction

I fell in love with Matlock more for the Ellie backstory than anything else, and the newest exploration of that story gave me everything I needed.

Like Matty and Edwin, I have to live with the ghosts of the past. In my case, it was an ex-partner who overdosed soon after I left, and it was bound up with other terrible things that happened.

There aren’t many shows to turn to that depict addiction accurately — too many rely on stereotypes or shock value, which has never helped me feel understood. But Matlock Season 2 Episode 15 yet again demonstrated that it was different.

Edwin’s refusal to accept that Joey had relapsed and his desire to cut him out of his life felt judgmental and short-sighted until the final scene, where he admitted he was still struggling with all the times Ellie had done the same.

(Michael Yarish/CBS)

I was initially annoyed with him. I studied addiction counseling, so I knew that relapses are often part of recovery and that, in any case, after a relapse, the person has no choice but to start again and can’t go back to however many days of sobriety they’d achieved beforehand.

Ediwn was right that Joey is responsible for his own choices, but like so many things when it comes to addiction, it isn’t that simple.

Other people’s choices can make it harder or easier for the addicted person to keep making good decisions, and the pull of addiction is sometimes hard to overcome, making it something that is not completely freely chosen.

Of course, Edwin was right to be concerned about how Joey’s addiction could affect Alfie, who had already lost his mother at a very young age and was at risk of losing the father who had recently come into his life.

That didn’t mean that yelling at Joey or telling Alfie in an angry, unplanned way that Joey had known about him years ago was the best decision, and I was right there with Maddy when she wondered why Edwin was suddenly behaving like this.

(Michael Yarish/CBS)

Still, when Edwin finally broke down in tears, I knew exactly how he felt.

One of the things that almost nobody talks about is how exhausting, scary, and traumatic it is to live with someone whose behavior changes from day to day, depending on how their battle with sobriety is going.

That’s what kept me in the relationship for so long. When my partner was sober, he was amazing, and it all seemed so random that when things were bad, I didn’t know for sure that they wouldn’t get good again if I hung on for a few days longer.

That’s why I love scenes like this one. They tell the truth, and I’m sure I’m not the only person who understood something new about myself and my relationship with an addicted person through this story.

I also appreciated the continuation of Maddy’s AI story and how it also became somewhat of an addiction for her.

(Michael Yarish/CBS)

While I’m not a huge fan of tattoos, getting one in memory of Ellie was probably healthier than hanging onto that AI version of her.

The AI version is a contemporary version of the Holodeck on Star Trek: The Next Generation — a simulation that can seem very real but is, in fact, a computer program.

Matlock Season 2 Episode 15 did a phenomenal job of showing how a simulation of a loved one who is no longer here can fill the deep need to interact with them again and numb the grief a bit, to the point that it becomes a new addiction.

Maddy probably understood Ellie a little better after struggling to stop interacting with the simulation. For the first time, she understood what it was like to have to wake up every day with an intense urge to do something you know is unhealthy and will disappoint all the people whose opinions matter to you.

I wish Matlock Season 2 Episode 15 had delved more deeply into Maddy’s new understanding, but it did so much right when it came to the addiction and grief story that that was a minor flaw.

(Michael Yarish/CBS)

The Case Of The Week Only Reinforced The Point, But The WelBrexa Stuff Was A Distraction

The actual case seemed important more because the plaintiff couldn’t let go of his father’s death and desperately needed someone to blame than for its own sake.

I wish that had led Maddy to realize that her quest for revenge and justice for Ellie’s death would never satisfy her, and to give up the mission to expose Senior.

That aspect of the show is weaker than everything else, and on Matlock Season 2 Episode 15 it felt like comic relief more than anything else.

Still, with a two-hour wrap-up before Matlock disappears from the schedule for nearly a year (Matlock Season 3 will be a midseason replacement series), I have hope that maybe we can finally end this farce and move on to more worthwhile stories.

(Michael Yarish/CBS )

Also, I’ve stopped caring which decision Sarah makes, so if she could just make one so we can move on, that would be great.
