In the world of Broadway, where dreams soar and egos sometimes crash spectacularly, it’s essential to remember that not everything that glitters is gold. A recent anecdote shared by a former merchandise seller paints a vivid picture of the disillusionment that can occur when the people we idolize don’t live up to our expectations. “I used to sell merchandise at a Broadway show. The director of the show was someone I had been a big fan of since I was a child, so I was really pumped to get to work in the same building as them and see them every day. I wanted to be a theatre director at that point, and that director was a huge part of the reason why. One day, I was cleaning up the merch booth and was bent down behind it so if you walked through the lobby, you wouldn’t see me. The director walked out of the theatre and was screaming at this other person about how shitty the show was, how none of it was their fault, and everything was everyone else’s fault.”

“They were screaming about the costume designer being awful, the script being garbage, the set not looking good, etc. And all I could think was: they co-wrote the script,  they directed the show, and had control over every aspect of it.  They approved all of it. How the fuck is any of it someone else’s fault? I lost all respect for them that day.”
