It has been more than three decades since the death of Nivana’s Kurt Cobain shook the world.

Shortly after he was found dead with a gunshot wound in his Seattle home, his death was declared a suicide, but the truth could be even more sinister.

Almost 32 years on, a retired police captain has come forward claiming he believes the rockstar was murdered, with the crime scene set up to suggest he had taken his own life.

Neil Low worked in the Seattle Police Department for 50 years and was asked to look into the investigation of Cobain’s tragic death in 2005, which he has since described as ‘botched.’

“I just am not buying that Kurt did that to himself,” the former captain told the Daily Mail, before going on to list a number of abnormalities found at the scene.

According to Low, his audit of the investigation found anomalies in blood evidence, the violence of the gunshot wound and other alleged inconsistencies at the scene.

He also found varied accounts within the autopsy and police department’s report, including witness observations being left out, varied accounts about the events leading up to the 27-year-old’s death and notes missing.

Low explained: “One thing about report writing is the human error factor: misheard, misunderstood, transposed thoughts, and forgotten details.

“They were led astray. I might have fallen for it, too, but now I think it’s a homicide, and I do think the case should be reopened.”

Seattle Police Department have since been questioned over the processes used to determine Cobain’s death was a suicide before the toxicology and autopsy were completed.

“Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994. This continues to be the position held by the Seattle Police Department,” they said in a statement.

The musician’s death, which took place on 5 April, 1994, was officially ruled as suicide by the King County Medical Examiner, who said Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound from a Remington Model 11 20-gauge shotgun.

However, Low is far from the first person to suggest there could be foul play involved in the frontman’s death.

Cobain was survived by his wife, Courtney Love, and their toddler daughter, Frances Bean.

An unofficial private sector team of forensic scientists have teamed up with specialist Brian Burnett and independent researcher Michelle Wilkins.

The team, who also believe Cobain’s death was a homicide, have ‘exhaustively’ reviewed the autopsy documents, and have assembled a peer-reviewed paper with their findings, which has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Forensic Science.
