Donald Trump‘s niece, Mary Trump, has offered an account of the president’s parenting and his relationship with his kids, describing what she claimed was a strange attachment to his daughter Ivanka Trump.
In an appearance on the British podcast, “The Rest is Politics,” with hosts Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart, Mary claimed the U.S. president was very “hands-off” in his kids’ lives growing up.
Donald Trump was allegedly emotionally distant from his children, especially two of his sons, which is said to stem from his father Fred Trump Sr.’s influence.

Mary, the daughter of Trump’s dearly departed elder brother, Fred Trump Jr., recently claimed that her uncle was largely “hands-off” in raising his kids and lacked the emotional connection between a parent and child.
While speaking on the podcast, she discussed her observations of Trump’s parenting from the few occasions she got to see her younger cousins.
“He was an entirely hands-off father. He had no real interest in his children,” Mary said, alleging that Trump wasn’t really connected emotionally to his children.
She described Trump’s dynamic with his kids as relatively cold and added that the detachment was particularly present in his relationship with his “two older boys,” Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.

While Mary claimed the president was emotionally distant from his children, she also described Trump’s relationship with his eldest daughter as she grew older as “very odd.”
“When Ivanka got older, he had this very odd attachment to her, but I cannot exactly say that it was paternal,” Mary revealed on the podcast, per OK! Magazine.
The 61-year-old recalled that Ivanka was “constantly sitting” on Trump’s lap on the occasions she was with her cousin and added that while she couldn’t explain why, she found their closeness “odd and off-putting.”
Mary’s claim about Trump and Ivanka isn’t new. In a 2020 report by The Mercury News, she described in her book “Too Much and Never Enough,” a scene from the 1990s in which a teenage Ivanka is seated on her father’s lap.
As revealed in the book, while on his lap, Trump kissed her and pinched her on the cheek as his sons wrestled on the floor in front of them.
The publication noted that the scene was disturbing for some readers and that it was consistent with reports suggesting Trump shows favoritism towards his eldest daughter while treating his eldest sons “roughly and even with disdain.”

Trump has had quite a history of saying things about Ivanka that people see as unsettling and strange for a father to say about his daughter.
According to The Independent, Trump had described a then 16-year-old Ivanka as “hot” while she hosted the 1997 Miss Teen USA pageant. “Don’t you think my daughter’s hot? She’s hot, right?” he asked.
He has spoken about Ivanka’s hotness on several occasions, talking about how she has the “best body” and that she’s “one of the great beauties of the world, according to everybody.”
In 2004, Trump agreed with Howard Stern’s description of Ivanka as a “piece of ass” and has bluntly stated he would date her if she wasn’t his daughter.
While on the Dr. Oz show, Trump reportedly revealed that he kisses Ivanka “with every chance [he] gets,” a comment that was supposedly edited out of the final cut of the show.

Mary attributed Trump’s coldness to his upbringing under Fred Sr., who she claimed saw kindness as weakness and previously described as a “sociopath.”
The clinical psychologist claimed that her grandfather discouraged emotional sensitivity in his kids. Mary told ABC News in 2020 that her grandfather taught his children to see people as “expendable” and to win no matter the cost.
She claimed that Fred Sr. had punished her father and the president’s brother for being kind and for “having interests outside of what my grandfather thought was acceptable.”
That kind of upbringing is what she claims Trump has been influenced by as he became emotionally distant from his own children.
“The lesson he learned was do not be anything like Freddy. Do not be kind. Do not be empathetic. Do not be sensitive,” Mary said in her podcast appearance.

While the president supposedly had no real emotional connection to his children, reports indicate he has a very close relationship with his youngest son, Barron Trump.
Trump has five children from three marriages; he shares Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric with his first wife, Ivana Trump, and welcomed daughter Tiffany Trump with his second wife, Maria Maples.
His youngest son, Barron, whom he appears particularly close to, came from his relationship with his current wife and first lady, Melania Trump.
According to the Mirror US, body language expert Judi James observed that Trump finds it easier to be a father to Barron than his other children and that the president shows a softer side with the young man.
