Emmy-winning actor Steven Yeun is returning to Netflix to lead Pagans, a supernatural drama from Joshua Zetumer, the creator of Say Nothing. In addition to his starring role, Yeun will executive-produce the series that has become one of the streamer’s most talked-about projects in recent memory.
According to Deadline, Pagans is “equal parts emotional, horrifying, and humorous, and unearths all our darkest thoughts about family. It follows Gus (Yeun), who becomes the sole caretaker of his two children after the tragic loss of his wife. While his son is typical, his daughter, Alice, is anything but. What starts as a strained father-daughter relationship soon evolves into something far more sinister.”
Whispers about Pagans began a year ago, when Zetumer’s spec script was the hottest bidding-war ticket in town. Deadline says 15-18 studios, platforms, and producers were opening their wallets for the chance to host Pagans, with Netflix ultimately winning the pot after granting the project a straight-to-series order.
Pagans marks another Netflix project for Yeun, after the Walking Dead actor starred alongside Ali Wong in the limited series Beef, which landed him an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a SAG Award. Yeun also stars in Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s cop drama, The Rip, which premiered exclusively on Netflix in January. Yeun will join forces with Affleck again for another Netflix joint called Animals, a political thriller about a mayoral candidate and his wife, desperate to pay their son’s ransom, who resort to extreme measures, revealing dark secrets they never intended to bring to light. Affleck is directing Animals in addition to his starring role alongside Yeun, Gillian Anderson, Kerry Washington, and Ray Fisher.
If you’re craving more from Steven Yeun, you can catch him as the voice of Zuko in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, an outstanding sequel film that picks up years after the original animated series. In my review of Avatar Aang, I said, “As a die-hard Avatar fan, I loved Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. The conflict in Aang’s heart is palpable in this story, and I understand him better than ever after watching this movie. The animation is stunning, the voice performances are layered and dynamic, and the score makes each part of the story feel grand and epic.”
