Jeffrey Wright has come to the fierce defense of France World Cup star Kylian Mbappé after the soccer icon was targeted with racist abuse following his country’s Round of 16 win over Paraguay. The actor condemned the attackers as “lazy-minded” people whose insults could never diminish Mbappé’s talent or impact on the game.
Mbappé himself also strongly denounced the racist remarks against him, saying there is no justification for such.
After scoring the decisive penalty in France’s 1-0 World Cup Round of 16 victory over Paraguay on July 4, Kylian Mbappé became the target of racist abuse from Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla.
In a series of derogatory messages, the politician attacked the French captain’s heritage, appearance, education, and upbringing. She reportedly called him a “colonized Cameroonian” and described him as “a brute who had not learned to write,” per The Guardian.
Although Amarilla later deleted the posts and expressed regret over parts of her language, she stopped short of offering a full apology and instead defended her right to criticize Mbappé.
Actor Jeffrey Wright did not hold back when speaking about the racist abuse directed at Mbappé, blasting those behind the attacks as “lazy-minded” people trying to elevate themselves by tearing down one of football’s biggest stars.
“Look at this bullsh-t. What is she talking about?! I mean, here’s this guy who’s one of the greatest football players in the world,” Wright said during a roundtable interview at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, according to Variety.
The “Westworld” star argued that the insults said far more about the people making them than about the France captain himself.
“And yet you have to hear this nonsense from this lazy-minded, self-aggrandizing, self-pleasuring people who are trying to derive some sense of self, some degree of power by thinking that they can be disparaging of him,” he continued. “They think they can somehow diminish how powerful he is on the field with their stupidity. It’s just remarkable.”
Expanding on his defense of Mbappé, Wright argued that being Black is shaped by social and political realities rather than biology.
“But the thing is, France won 2-0 yesterday, and this is the key. If who you are is powerful, there’s nothing they can do to stop you,” Wright said before adding, “I’m Black, and for me, it’s a political term. It’s not a biological term.”
The actor connected that idea to the life of pioneering artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whom he portrayed in Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film “Basquiat” and whose father he now plays in the upcoming biopic “Samo Lives.” Wright said Basquiat ultimately “won through the power of his work,” describing him as someone who embodied “the power of freedom” and “the power of creativity.”
On his part, Mbappé did not stay silent after Amarilla’s racist tirade. The Real Madrid forward issued a scathing response condemning both her remarks and her position in public office.
Writing on X, Mbappé branded Amarilla “a despicable woman” and said she was unworthy of serving as a senator. He also accused her of tarnishing Paraguay’s impressive World Cup campaign by drawing attention away from the team’s achievements with what he described as “brazen racism.”
The soccer star argued that Amarilla’s comments reflected prejudice rather than patriotism, adding that no sporting rivalry could justify attacking someone’s race, heritage, or identity.
Wright’s outspoken defense of Mbappé adds to a growing wave of support from political leaders, football authorities, and the footballer’s own club.
French President Emmanuel Macron publicly backed the World Cup winner. Writing on social media, he invoked words from their country’s national motto, saying, “All my support. When words smear, our values respond: dignity, respect, fraternity.”
The French Football Federation condemned the remarks as “utterly abhorrent” and filed a legal complaint with prosecutors. Real Madrid also threw its support behind its star forward, describing Mbappé as a role model and reiterating that racism and discrimination have no place in football or society.
Meanwhile, Paraguay’s government distanced itself from Senator Celeste Amarilla’s comments, stressing that they did not reflect the nation’s values. In fact, the country’s Senate later approved a declaration rejecting discriminatory and racist speech.
