Did you ever think that revisiting the past could leave you feeling as old as your mom’s favorite hairstyle? Well, brace yourself—millennials just got hit with another reality check as the age of the iconic “Stacy’s Mom” from the hit Fountains of Wayne music video has been revealed! You might remember the catchy tune playing while the teenage heartthrob pines not for Stacey herself, but for her alluring mum, played by none other than the stunning model Rachel Hunter, who at the time was 34 years old. It’s a little bit of a shockwave, isn’t it? As the stars align and remind us how fast time flies, even a simple trip down memory lane can stir feelings of nostalgia and a smidgen of existential dread. Yet, in the grand tapestry of the cosmos, is it also a gentle nudge to embrace where we are—whatever our age—along this wild ride called life? LEARN MORE.

Millennials have been given another shock to the system after the age of Stacy’s Mom in the hit music video has been revealed.

The hit song and music video by Fountains of Wayne, which has not exactly aged brilliantly, sees a teenage boy arranging to visit a female friend from school, Stacey, seemingly because he wants to go out with her, but actually so he can gawp at her mum as he fantasises about her.

Fountains of Wayne guitarist Adam Schlesinger spoke about the inspiration behind the song, saying: “It’s sort of about that period when you’re first hitting puberty and suddenly everybody of the opposite sex is strangely attractive.

“It’s a combination of sexual awakening and limited contact with a large number of people. It’s the kids at school and whoever else happens to be in your life.”

Well, brace yourselves millennials, because the actor who played the title role in the music video for Stacey’s Mom is Rachel Hunter, a model and actor from New Zealand.

At the time the video was filmed, Hunter was 34 years old, and many millennials were left having a moment of crisis upon discovering the news in a broadcast by thehitsdrive, which was shared to Instagram.

“As someone is was born in 92 and is turn 34 in two weeks, this kinda hurts ngl,” wrote one in the comments.

Another replied: “As someone who was born in 1992, I didn’t need this attack today.”

Someone else wrote simply: “Nope. Hate this.”

Since her appearance in the music video, Hunter has appeared as a judge on New Zealand’s Got Talent and RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as appearing on Dancing With The Stars.

It’s perhaps understandable that millennials particularly might have such a visceral reaction to this, as there may be more to this than just feeling like we’re getting old, even though let’s be real – being in your 30s isn’t old.

This is because the constant stream of once in a generation catastrophes that millennials have experienced in what feels like practically an annual occurrence has resulted in us not hitting milestones in life in the same way previous generations did.

For example, more millennials are opting to not have children. While some make that decision because they simply don’t want children, though even that is influenced by this, for others they might want them but just don’t think it’s viable when they can barely support themselves despite working a well paid job.

Another thing is that as the world degenerates into a seemingly endless cycle of traumatic and experiences and events, for millennials nostalgia becomes a crutch.

Instead of being married and having kids by 30, both of which are expensive, we take comfort in things from a time when we, and the world, felt safer.

All this means we’re not ‘grown up’ in the same sense as earlier generations, because who can afford a big wedding when bills are rising, and forget buying a house unless you inherit.

As if all that wasn’t enough, now we are realising that emo themed nights in 2026 are like how 70s nights would have been in the 90s, because the iconic album The Black Parade was released 20 years ago this year.

Also, Macaulay Culkin from Home Alone is now 46 years old.
