Critic’s Rating: 4.75 / 5.0

Some TV shows are built to last multiple seasons, but I don’t think Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is one of them.

The series has told a compelling, self-contained story throughout its first season, and barring one last-minute cliffhanger, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Season 1 Episode 10 functions as a near-perfect finale.

I genuinely wondered whether the series could wrap up its biggest mysteries in under 40 minutes, but it did exactly that before teasing an intriguing new chapter.

Paula has been to hell and back in her quest to clear her name, protect her custody agreement, and ultimately save her own life.

She’s made some maddening decisions along the way, but the finale helped me understand her on a much deeper level. Her desperation to finally get to the other side of this nightmare shone through in every scene.

Considering the bodies piling up, I figured Paula’s only way out was either a lengthy prison sentence or death.

These people haven’t exactly proven to be forgiving, and since she knew all of their secrets, killing her would have been the cleaner option.

The way Paula managed to get onto the property and confront the Vanderville family matriarch was both tenacious and terrifying.

I kept imagining everything that could go wrong, and if I was that nervous watching from my couch, Paula must have been experiencing something far worse.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Delivers a Wild Conclusion

Watching her go toe-to-toe with a woman wielding a golf club was incredibly tense because one swing could have ended Paula’s story right there.

Thankfully, she’d done the work to uncover everything there was to know about Dennis and his crimes. Without that leverage, she never would have made it out alive.

There’s something fascinating about Paula when her back is against the wall. She has an uncanny ability to explain herself in a way that feels equal parts desperate and believable.

While she had an arsenal of information, it was ultimately her plea to the head of the Vanderville family that struck a chord. For a brief moment, it felt like everyone could simply move on with their lives.

When Dennis was revealed to be alive, I immediately feared what it meant for Paula. He’s spent the entire season trying to eliminate her, so bringing him back into the story felt like the worst possible outcome.

Then the show pulled the rug out from under us by killing him almost immediately.

At first, it seemed like an odd creative decision, but once the suicide note surfaced and Paula was exonerated, everything clicked into place.

Dennis had only been kept alive in case he became useful to the family again. The moment Paula exposed everything he’d done, the Vandervilles realized he had become a liability. Killing him and allowing him to shoulder the blame was the easiest way to protect themselves.

It was a huge victory for Paula, but she barely had time to enjoy it before heading into the custody hearing for Hazel.

My heart broke for her because it felt like no one was truly in her corner, and Mallory’s underhanded tactics gave the opposing attorney all the ammunition they needed to paint Paula as an unfit mother.

If Tatiana Maslany’s work on Orphan Black was award-worthy, she’s somehow delivered something even more emotionally devastating here.

Her courtroom scenes were phenomenal. She peeled back every layer of Paula’s vulnerability, and even though I’m not completely convinced Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed needs a second season, I’d happily watch another one just to see Maslany continue inhabiting this character.

I was so relieved when the judge recognized that Paula hadn’t actually broken any laws and that Hazel was thriving in her mother’s care.

It was an incredibly satisfying moment because it finally proved to Paula that everything she’d endured hadn’t been for nothing.

The looks on Karl and Mallory’s faces were the icing on the cake.

They were so convinced they’d destroyed Paula’s credibility that they probably thought they’d be heading to Boise without another worry in the world.

Is Karl Just as Bad as Mallory?

I’ve said multiple times throughout Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Season 1 that Karl was never going to be comfortable with Mallory’s underhanded tactics, and sure enough, he was furious when the Portland incident resurfaced.

I genuinely thought that would be the moment he walked away from her, but somehow he still seems content letting Mallory steamroll every decision he makes.

Paula’s celebration with the school moms and their children should have been a chance for her to finally breathe, but I spent the entire sequence expecting Jennifer to make her move.

The writing and directing were excellent because I never saw Brian showing up and gunning Jennifer down before she reached Paula’s apartment.

It was a genuinely shocking left-field twist that immediately made me curious about where a second season could go.

Unfortunately for Paula, that happiness lasted only moments.

Just as it seemed she’d escaped the nightmare, someone pulled her right back into it with a video proving she killed the man in Portland.

I honestly expected the footage to reveal her shooting Dennis, so I audibly gasped when the camera pulled back and showed what really happened.

There was so much more to that night than Paula had led everyone — including us — to believe.

Not only did she provoke the confrontation, but it also appears she had a history with the man she killed. If Apple TV renews Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, I imagine this revelation will become one of the show’s biggest storylines.

I do have one admittedly outlandish theory.

I think Karl sent Paula the video.

Hear me out.

Karl looked absolutely furious after Paula refused to compromise on Hazel moving to Boise with him and Mallory. He seemed convinced she’d eventually cave, and when she didn’t, something shifted.

Why should Paula compromise, anyway? Karl and Mallory have made her life miserable from the very beginning.

Then there’s the detective side of the story. I genuinely expected Detective Baxter to die after the events of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Season 1 Episode 9, so I was pleasantly surprised to see him pull through.

The entire ordeal has clearly shaken Detective Gonzalez because she’s convinced there’s far more to this case than anyone wants her to uncover.

Her visit to Paula at the end, where she admits everything feels “too clean,” suggests she’s far from done investigating.

If the Vandervilles really did send Paula that message, there’s every chance they’ll force her into a life of crime if Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed returns for another season.

Had the cliffhanger been omitted, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Season 1 Episode 10 would have functioned beautifully as a series finale.

Instead, it leaves just enough unanswered that I’m genuinely curious to see where Paula’s story could go next.
