In the world of Hollywood, where stars align and the moon dances to the rhythm of awards season, it’s hard not to wonder—what cosmic forces are at play when remarkable talent gets overlooked? It seems that in the case of films like Selma, Straight Outta Compton, and Hidden Figures, the universe had other plans, snubbing visionary directors and captivating performances, even as these films shone brightly among the nominees. With Ava DuVernay’s exclusion for Best Director and David Oyelowo’s absence from the Best Actor category for Selma, one can’t help but feel a twinge of injustice. Yet, amidst the frustrations of losses, Selma did take home an Oscar for “Glory,” the powerful anthem that graced our hearts. As we dive into the turbulent waters of recognition and snubs, we can’t help but ask—will the stars finally align for more voices to be heard in this dazzling industry? Join me as we unravel the stories behind some of the most impactful films that deserved their moment in the spotlight! LEARN MORE.
How much time do you have, because I’m still not done. Selma (2014) snubbed Ava DuVernay, who was not nominated for Best Director, and lead actor David Oyelowo was snubbed for Best Actor, despite the film being nominated for Best Picture (which it lost). However, Selma did win for Best Original Song for “Glory.” Straight Outta Compton (2015) was one of the best biopics in recent memory when it was released, and a box-office and critical hit. Still, it was only nominated for Best Original Screenplay (Andrea Berloff, Jonathan Herman, S. Leigh Savidge, Alan Wenkus), which it lost. Hidden Figures (2016), yet another hit movie on this list, was nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi) but did not win in any category.
