Kerry Washington has a history with the Hulu streaming service, having starred in and executive produced the limited series Little Fires Everywhere and the comedy drama UnPrisoned, and Deadline reports that Washington and Hulu are extending their working relationship with a thriller series called What Remains, based on Wendy Walker‘s 2023 novel. Washington will star in the series and executive produce.
Taking the helm of the pilot episode is McG. One of the companies behind the project is Kapital Entertainment, and McG has previously directed two Kapital pilots that have gone to series: The Mysteries of Laura at NBC and Kevin From Work at ABC Family.
In What Remains, after taking the life of a disturbed man in the line of duty, Detective Elise Sutton (Washington) – a devoted wife, loving mother, and cold case specialist — reels from the guilt of her actions. To convince herself that she did the right thing, she makes contact with a mysterious man that she saved that day, only to discover that he’s not at all what he seems. She’s soon caught in a dangerous game of cat and mouse, following the clues he leaves for her and realizing that the only person who can stop him… is her.
Walker’s novel has the following description: Detective Elise Sutton is a forensics expert with a knack for solving cold cases and a deep knowledge of the criminal mind. She prides herself on being rational and in control, until a crisis at a department store leaves her steeped in guilt and self-doubt about whether she did the right thing to save a man’s life. Elise is hailed as a hero, but she doesn’t feel like one. She soon grows numb, even to her husband and daughters, as she sets out to find the one man who might know the truth. When she finds him–or did he find her?–their connection sets off a terrifying game of cat and mouse, threatening Elise and the people she loves most.
The series adaptation of What Remains is being executive produced by writer Chris Luccy alongside Washington and Pilar Savone of Simpson Street; Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment; and McG, Mary Viola, and Corey Marsh of Wonderland Sound and Vision. Co-executive producing are Dylan Hammalian (Kapital Entertainment), Adam Haiken (Wonderland), and Will McDonald (Simpson Street). Walker is a producer. 20th TV, where Simpson Street has an overall deal, and Kapital are the studios.
