The actor teased the possibility of returning to reprise his iconic role, as fans have been throwing questions about a potential comeback for years. This comes nearly two months after Orlando Bloom said he has been in touch with the American actor and is looking forward to a reunion.

It’s been nine years since the last new “Pirates” movie aired and over two decades since the first. Time has made fans’ hearts grow fonder of the film series as they keep asking for a new one.

Bloom says he also asks “all the time” about what the hold-up is on a new “Pirates” movie, but he thinks a reunion is possible. While some cast members have moved on to other projects, some still keep in touch.

“I do connect with Depp every now and again, because he’s amazing,” the English actor admitted during the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival in September.

“I think it’s like, that was so fun, and it was such a zeitgeist-y thing. I mean, I don’t know how they do it or when they do it, but I haven’t heard,” Bloom told Entertainment Weekly. He also praised the cast, calling them a “really good group of people” before talking about how deeply rooted nostalgia is in today’s world.

Depp had a humorous answer to the big question of whether he would be reprising his role as Jack Sparrow soon. He spoke to PEOPLE at the special screening of his new movie “Ebenezer” in NYC on November 1.

Weighing in on Bloom’s previous comments, Depp jokingly said, “Well, I think we should have a contest of who can grow the fastest non-beard.  Because neither of us can grow a beard, I don’t think. I can’t, for sure, but maybe he can. I don’t know.”

So is a beard truly the hold-up on a new film for the “Pirates” franchise? Depp and Bloom starred in the first three installments alongside Keira Knightley and Geoffrey Rush, before the dad of two took the lead role in the 2011 and 2017 films.

Depp was embroiled in a highly televised legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard. She accused him of domestic violence and filed for a restraining order and divorce in 2016.

They reached a settlement and obtained a divorce the following year, but in 2018, Depp filed a defamation suit against “The Sun” for calling him a “wife beater.” He lost the case and filed a defamation case against his ex.

Depp dragged Heard to court over a 2018 op-ed she wrote, in which she described herself as a survivor of domestic abuse, though she didn’t name Depp.  The case concluded in 2022 when a jury found her liable on three counts of defamation. The jury also found the actor liable on one count of defamation in Heard’s countersuit.

After the highly publicized trial, Depp clarified that reports claiming he would return to the Pirates franchise were false. The actor stayed clear of Hollywood for a while before returning to other projects.

Bruckheimer revealed at Disney’s D23 event last August that a sixth film is in the works. He told media outlets that they are already in talks with Depp about returning for the new film as they work on the screenplay.

Depp has not formally signed on for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” yet, even though talks are underway. As The Blast reported, Disney has also not announced a release date, production schedule, or full cast for the movie.

Insiders claim that the new movie will take a different direction and Depp may not be the star of the show. The new storyline is said to focus on the character played by Margot Robbie, while Captain Jack Sparrow would be a supporting character. However, Robbie and Disney have not confirmed these reports.

Major studios distanced themselves from Depp during his legal challenges with Heard, and Warner Bros. even asked him to step down from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise. The actor said the industry made him feel “shunned, dumped, booted, deep-sixed, canceled” because of the allegations that made him lose his iconic role.

Depp marked his return to major Hollywood studio filmmaking with “Ebenezer,” seemingly reestablishing himself in mainstream Hollywood. His comeback is followed by a role in Lionsgate’s “Day Drinker” opposite Penélope Cruz.

As shared by The Blast, Depp’s return to the industry was not welcomed with open arms by all. Stuart Heritage, a columnist, stated that his new role as Ebenezer Scrooge asks audiences to overlook the controversies tied to his name over the past few years. He questioned whether enough time has passed between the actor’s legal troubles for his comeback to feel comfortable.
