20th Century Studios has dropped the final trailer for Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic epic The Dog Stars, a project Josh Brolin almost walked away from on day one.
Brolin had previously worked with Scott on American Gangster, but he was so thrown by how the director was handling The Dog Stars that he told his agent he wanted out almost immediately.
“Ridley was talking a lot of stories and not really rehearsing,” Brolin told Empire, “and it bugged me out, and I got really scared. I went back, called my agent and said, ‘I want out. Something’s really wrong, and I’ve got to get the fuck out of here.’ Luckily my agent is a close friend and he said, ‘Rest for a day.’ I was like, ‘No, man, I know what the fuck you’re doing. It’s not one of those day-things.’ And I was right.”
Scott likes to shoot multiple-camera set-ups to keep things moving, and Brolin had some trouble adjusting, but he’s thankful he pushed through the discomfort. “It took about a day or two for me to really embrace that, and then I got super into it because it was stratospherically creative and stratospherically dangerous,” he said. “It was like, ‘This is what I’ve been asking for but now I’m getting it, I’m fighting it, because there’s zero comfort in it.’ It became one of the more creative, satisfying projects that I’ve ever been involved with.“
The film tells the story of Hig (Jacob Elordi), a young pilot who, together with a military survivalist, Bangley (Josh Brolin), has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal post-apocalyptic world. But when Hig receives a mysterious radio transmission, he ventures into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exist.
The rest of the cast includes Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Benedict Wong, and Guy Pearce. It will be released in theaters, IMAX, and premium large formats on August 28.
Scott has said that The Dog Stars might be his best movie. But if you recall, Scott made a similar claim about Gladiator II, calling it “one of the best things I’ve ever made.“
I’m usually always down for anything Scott does—even his less-regarded projects are typically a good time—but for whatever reason, The Dog Stars just isn’t connecting with me. That said, I know I’ll be watching it.
