After a year of waiting, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is finally coming back!

This August, the longest-running live-action sitcom is returning with its eighteenth season.

Ahead of the premiere, FX has released a synopsis for what the upcoming episodes will cover.

In this article, we’re breaking down everything covered by the teaser, from the Hell yeahs to the Oh noes.

So, get ready to dive in headfirst to what It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 will have to offer!

What We Can Get Hyped About!

Let’s start with the positives.

First, I’m excited that the newest season will have a full set of ten new episodes.

The last few seasons have had only about eight episodes each, and hopefully the extra two episodes will give the story more room to breathe.

In terms of the story itself, the plot point that stood out to me the most was that the gang will embrace “a newfound appreciation for neurodivergence.”

While this might seem out of the blue, the show has already touched on adjacent topics, such as Charlie learning to read in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 1, “The Gang F’s Up Abbott Elementary”.

I’m curious what the “newfound appreciation” might entail, but I hope the show can discuss neurodivergence in an approachable, positive light while maintaining its signature satirical tone.

Another point that has me curious is the Gang “questioning the fabric of society against conspiracy theories.”

Considering how big the Charlie Pepe Silvia meme has become, it’s safe to say that conspiracy theories are definitely in It’s Always Sunny’s ballpark.

The sitcom has always been topical, but it’s definitely hitting close to home by covering “job loss at the hands of workplace automation.”

I’ve always wondered what the Gang’s stance on AI would be, and I’m hoping this episode offers a unique and humorous angle on a dilemma many people currently struggle with.

But even though It’s Always Sunny covers real-world problems, I love when it returns to the more outrageous parts of its wacky world.

Specifically, the teaser that the Gang will have to face “a particularly petulant McPoyle clan at the Renaissance Faire” has me hooked.

Anything with the creepy McPoyles is guaranteed to be entertaining, and I can’t wait for their return.

What I’m Skeptical About

(Patrick McElhenney/FX)

As much as I want to hope that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 will be perfect, some parts of the synopsis have me worried.

Namely, the plot point of “surviving tent encampments and the great inside-outside divide between the haves and have-nots” made me raise an eyebrow.

It’s Always Sunny has already tackled the topic of homelessness in past episodes, such as Season 3 Episode 14, “Bums: Making A Mess All Over the City.”

So, I’m a bit skeptical about the show rehashing a topic it’s already covered.

My biggest problem with this sitcom in recent years is that I’m worried the series is losing its original angle, and returning to what’s already been covered doesn’t inspire much hope.

(Patrick McElhenney/FX)

The same goes for “sportswashing their way back into the good graces of their community.”

The “sportswashing” part feels like the show is trying to capture the magic of its sports-themed episodes, such as the iconic Season 3 Episode 2, “The Gang Gets Invincible,” in which the Gang tried out for the Eagles.

The sport the Gang tries out isn’t specified here, but I’m wondering if the episode will manage to match the past magic. After its recent seasons, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has its work cut out for winning back the good graces of fans yearning for the good old days.

Overall Takeaways

After breaking down the synopsis, I’m approaching this season with cautious optimism.

There are some teasers that I’m neutral on, such as the Gang having to battle “nerds” and “LARPers,” but between the positives and the negatives, this season seems to be a mixed bag.

Of course, these initial thoughts are solely based on what FX has given us so far.

Once the trailer releases and we get more information about the Gang, we’ll have a better idea of the direction this season will take.

Regardless, I’m still seated and eager to see what Charlie, Dee, Mac, Dennis, and Frank have in store for us this season!
