I absolutely adored the trailer for Wicker, the upcoming romantic fantasy comedy starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård. Charming and bizarre, and more than a little sexy, it’s hitting all the right notes for me. I can’t wait to see it. Others have taken note of Skarsgård’s handsome wicker man, including IKEA, which recently posted a nod to the film on Instagram, featuring an ad for one of its handmade rattan benches with storage.
Love it. No notes.
Wicker is “a comedic fable about sex, marriage, and the absurdities of social convention. It’s the love story of an ostracized fisherwoman (Colman) who commissions a husband to be made by the local basket maker (Peter Dinklage). When her wicker husband (Skarsgård) proves more spectacular than she ever imagined, his soulful spirit and unique prowess awaken something inside her, setting off a wave of jealousy, fascination, and upheaval that threatens the very fabric of village life.“
The film is directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, who also adapted the script from the short story by Ursula Wills.
For Skarsgård, this is a dream role. “Most male actors dream of playing Hamlet at some point in their career. I never did,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “My dream was always to have nipples made out of wicker.“
Black Bear Pictures is distributing the film, and the President of U.S. Distribution, Benjamin Kramer, shared his enthusiasm for this unique comedy. “Wicker is just the kind of film we’re passionate about championing at Black Bear. It’s bold, entertaining, and totally unlike anything else, as its early fans at Sundance have seen,” he said. “Eleanor and Alex’s creative ambition shines through at every turn. Alongside an unforgettable cast, they have created a fresh and special experience. Supporting visionary filmmakers is at the core of what we do, and we look forward to bringing this unique story to audiences in theaters.“
Wicker hits select theaters on October 23, followed by a wider release on October 30.
