Nearly three years after four University of Idaho students were brutally murdered, the pain remains as raw as ever for the victims’ loved ones.

While Bryan Kohberger is now serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to the killings, one issue continues to trouble victim Kaylee Goncalves’ parents: the unwavering support he still receives from his own family.

In a candid interview, Kristi and Steve Goncalves opened up about their frustrations, the harassment they still endure, and why they believe Bryan’s relatives may be the key to finally getting answers.

The murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin devastated four families on November 13, 2022. Yet a fifth family remains forever tied to the tragedy: Bryan Kohberger’s own.

Despite the 31-year-old’s conviction, his parents and sisters have continued to maintain contact with him behind bars. That reality is difficult for Kaylee’s parents to understand.

“We walk in two different pairs of shoes,” Kristi Goncalves told the Daily Mail. While acknowledging that she cannot fully know how the Kohberger family feels, Kristi admitted she struggles to find sympathy.

“Their family does, and so does our family. I can’t say that I have a lot of compassion for their family,” she said.

Her husband, Steve, pointed out the glaring difference between the two families’ realities. “Kaylee can’t talk to us,” he said, adding, “We can’t go visit her.”

Though both parents acknowledged they cannot truly know how they would react in the same position, they questioned continuing to support someone responsible for such devastating loss.

Bryan’s Sister And Parents Remain By His Side

The family’s loyalty became more visible following a January interview Bryan Kohberger’s sister, Mel, granted to The New York Times.

According to the report, Mel, sister Amanda, mother Maryann, and father Michael Kohberger have all remained in contact with him since his conviction.

Amanda and Maryann attended his sentencing hearing, while Mel sent him a heart drawing to hold in court. The family even celebrated his birthday together after his imprisonment.

For the Goncalves family, those actions are difficult to reconcile with newly released details about the killings. Recently unsealed autopsy reports revealed the victims endured significant pain and suffering.

Kaylee’s injuries included blunt-force trauma to her face, signs of asphyxia, and indications that an unidentified object may have been pressed over her mouth.

Steve said he believes his response would have been very different. “If my son did that to somebody else’s family, it would be devastating,” he said. “I’m so sorry, son. I will always love you, but I could not come out to support him.”

The Goncalves family also believes they would have recognized signs pointing toward their child if they had been in the Kohbergers’ position.

As investigators searched for the killer in late 2022, surveillance images of a white Hyundai Elantra dominated national headlines. Bryan owned the same type of vehicle.

Steve believes that would have immediately raised concerns. “We would have figured it out,” he said. Referring to the Kohberger family, he added, “I don’t think they wanted to know.”

Steve accused them of “burying their heads in the sand” and said he would have insisted his child cooperate with authorities. “I think it’s time for you to go down to the sheriff’s office with me and turn yourself in,” he said.

Meanwhile, authorities have never suggested that Kohberger’s relatives knew about the murders before his arrest. However, both his mother and sister discussed the case with him as the investigation unfolded.

His mother even texted him a news article about the killings days after they occurred. Following his arrest, she reportedly told investigators, “My son would not do this” and referred to him as “my angel.”

Bryan’s Silence Continues To Fuel Conspiracy Theories

Although Bryan Kohberger admitted guilt last year, many questions remain unanswered. He never explained his motive, identified a specific target, or revealed why he chose the victims. He also declined to speak during sentencing.

According to the Goncalves family, that silence has allowed online conspiracy theories to flourish. A growing group of supporters known as “Probergers” continues to push claims of his innocence despite his guilty plea.

The impact on victims’ families has been severe. “People send us messages saying the truth isn’t out there, and they know the truth,” Kristi said.

She revealed that one supporter even sent her a death threat while she was delivering her victim impact statement during sentencing.

Steve also described supporters posting photos of their home online and even driving through their neighborhood.

“They post pictures online of our house. They drive down our road, take pictures of our house, to share with their followers,” he said.

Despite their frustration, the Goncalves family believes Bryan’s relatives may ultimately hold the greatest influence over him.

Steve argued that his parents and sisters could be the only people capable of convincing him to finally tell the full truth about the murders.

“They might be the only ones who can get the truth,” he said. Kristi said she would have reached out to the victims’ families years ago if she were in Maryann’s position.

“I am so incredibly sorry. I don’t even have words to express to you what my son did to your family,” Kristi shared.

According to the Goncalves family, no member of the Kohberger family has ever contacted them or the families of the other victims.

Still, Kristi remains open to a conversation and has even considered reaching out herself. Speaking directly to Kohberger’s family, she offered a simple plea. “Listen to your heart,” she said.
