The father of 20-year-old Learjet co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras has broken down while recalling his daughter’s final moments, revealing that he wished he had been aboard the doomed aircraft to protect her.

Allan Filgueiras, himself a pilot, described his daughter as his “soulmate” and praised her composure during the emergency that claimed nine lives in Florida on November 1.

He also shared memories of their time flying together, insisting that Nathalia’s final actions demonstrated her determination and professionalism.

Father Wishes He Had Been Aboard The Doomed Learjet With His Daughter

Allan Filgueiras struggled to contain his emotions during a press conference in Coral Gables, Florida, on Friday, November 6, as he spoke about losing his daughter in the devastating Learjet 60 crash.

Recalling the circumstances surrounding her death, the grieving father expressed his desperate wish to have been inside the aircraft with Nathalia during its final moments.

“I wanted to be by her side. Inside the plane, to help, to be by her. I had to be next to her,” he said through tears, per the New York Post.

He also described Nathalia as his “soulmate” and said listening to recordings of her final communications with air traffic control had been an emotional experience.

Allan revealed that he had repeatedly listened to the radio transmissions, hoping to find something that could explain what happened to the aircraft.

“I did listen to [her radio transmissions] many times, trying to find a clue in my head how that happened. And wow, she’s tough,” he said.

Rather than finding the answers he desperately wanted, the recordings left him with a renewed appreciation for how his daughter handled the unfolding emergency.

According to the Associated Press, he described the loss as feeling like his heart had been torn from his chest and admitted he was struggling to find a way to carry on without her.

Nathalia Filgueiras’ Final Moment Was Caught On A Recorded Conversation With Air Traffic Control

Allan’s tribute came after recordings of Nathalia’s final communications with air traffic control circulated following the crash.

The Learjet was flying at approximately 35,000 feet when the crew encountered a developing thunderstorm, severe turbulence, and reported ice buildup.

Nathalia initially communicated the aircraft’s changing conditions before the emergency escalated into a rapid descent.

“722 Bravo Delta, we’re descending 8,000. Mayday, Mayday, we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute!” she was heard saying in one of the transmissions.

She continued providing updates about the aircraft’s speed and altitude as the situation deteriorated.

In another communication, she reported an overspeed condition and a descent of 20,000 feet per minute.

Nathalia Filgueiras’ Dad Praises Her Courage During Final Mayday Calls

The final moments were increasingly frantic, with Nathalia warning that the aircraft was about to crash and that the crew was running out of time.

Her father said he was struck by how she continued communicating even as the situation became increasingly desperate.

The Associated Press reported that Allan believed his daughter demonstrated extraordinary courage, saying she had shown him what it meant to be a hero.

“She showed me what it is to be a hero because once you see that coming, a lot of the big boys — military or whatever — they can’t handle. And she was the one over there to the last minute fighting,” he said.

Former Instructor Remembers Her As An Exceptionally Gifted Pilot

Nathalia’s abilities as an aviator have also been defended by those who knew her professionally.

In a separate interview with People Magazine, her former flight instructor, Christopher Kirk, remembered her as an exceptionally gifted student whose passion for aviation was evident from an early age.

Kirk described her as a naturally talented aviator and expressed heartbreak over her death, rejecting suggestions that her young age meant she lacked the ability to handle the responsibilities of flying.

He insisted her age “had nothing to do with her being qualified,” explaining that she earned the co-pilot opportunity because of her piloting skills and ability to work well with others.

Nathalia had developed an interest in aviation while growing up, earning her pilot’s license while still in high school, before she was old enough to drive.

Her father also recalled how their relationship evolved through their shared passion for flying. He initially instructed her, but she eventually became his instructor, a development that reflected how far she had progressed in aviation.

Allan remembered how much Nathalia enjoyed her career, recalling a conversation in which she expressed amazement that she was getting paid to do something she loved so much.

“I would pay for this, but they’re actually paying me,” she had told him, per the New York Post.

Her father said her enthusiasm for flying was one of the things that made her special.

Family Pushes Back Against Questions About Her Experience

The tragedy has also prompted conversations about Nathalia’s age and qualifications, with her family determined to protect her professional reputation.

According to the Associated Press, the 20-year-old had accumulated more than 1,300 flight hours and completed extensive training required for her commercial pilot qualifications.

Her family’s attorney, Stuart Grossman, also defended her suitability for the co-pilot position, describing her as an exceptionally capable aviator, and highlighted that the news conference is aimed at preserving “not just her memory, but her reputation.”

He emphasized that her young age should not overshadow her accomplishments or the preparation she had undergone before taking the position.

“She was at the top of her class in everything that she did, and she was perfectly qualified to be the co-pilot on this flight, despite her tender years,” Grossman said.

Retired airline pilot John Cox also praised her professional progress, explaining that earning a position in the right seat of a Learjet 60 required demonstrating considerable ability.

Allan similarly insisted that his daughter had shown extraordinary courage during the emergency.

He described her actions as heroic, saying she continued fighting until the final moments despite the terrifying circumstances.
