This time, it’s the eerie tale of Crouch End, set in the shadowy corners of London, that is being transformed into a six-part limited series for Prime Video. Another Stephen King horror story is coming to the small screen. Crouch End, King’s short story set in London, is being adapted as a six-part limited series for Prime Video. The project will mark the first Stephen King adaptation to be produced in the U.K. (not counting “Dollar Baby” projects.)
Originally published in 1980, Crouch End takes its name from the real-life North London district where the story is set. The tale is considered a homage to H.P. Lovecraft and contains several references to the legendary horror author.
Crouch End originally appeared in the anthology New Tales of the Cthulhi Mythos before later being included in King’s Nightmares & Dreamscapes collection.
Prime Video has already greenlit the series, with Paul Tomalin (Bodies) adapting the story and Tom Shankland (Berlin Noir, The Serpent) directing. Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season are producing the series.
Casting is already underway, with Variety reporting that the project is generating a lot of interest.
According to the official synopsis:
London never sleeps deeply, and its dreams are uneasy. When global movie star Doris Freeman bursts into a London police station claiming that strange phenomena are behind the disappearance of her husband, police inspector Ted Vetter must investigate whether she’s telling the truth, whether she could be a murderer, or whether there’s something even more chilling at play.
The series will expand King’s original story into a supernatural crime thriller centered on Doris Freeman and police inspector Ted Vetter as they investigate the mysterious disappearance.
Prime Video’s Nicole Clemens, VP of International Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said:
“Stephen King is one of the defining storytellers of our time, and we’re thrilled to bring his Lovecraftian tale to life in London with Crouch End.”
“Paul Tomalin brings a singular, character-driven vision to the series and, paired with Tom Shankland at the helm, plus the first-class production teams at Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season, this show will grip audiences worldwide with its visceral crime thriller and supernatural mystery.”
Tomalin added:
“After reading Crouch End some years back, Stephen King’s vivid prose has haunted my nightmares ever since. Having the honour to adapt it with the incredible team at Mammoth, Fifth Season and Amazon alongside director Tom Shankland is a dream come true. I couldn’t be more excited to bring this thrilling tale to the screen.”

Interestingly, Crouch End itself has become something of a hub for the British film and television industry since King wrote the story. The North London neighborhood is now home to numerous writers, producers, actors and other entertainment-industry professionals.
