"From Oval Office to Offside: How Trump’s FIFA Fiasco Could Haunt Sports for a Generation!"

Added on July 9, 2026 inFree CelebrityNews

In a twist that seems to channel the celestial chaos of Mercury in retrograde, Donald Trump recently revealed he placed a call to FIFA’s big cheese, Gianni Infantino, regarding a red card doled out to USMNT’s Folarin Balogun. I mean, who knew that sports and politics would collide in such a dramatic fashion? With Trump’s team playing fast and loose with international regulations, one has to wonder—are we witnessing a planetary alignment of ego and intimidation? According to a former aide, what went down was less about a simple request and more about a power play reflecting Trump’s notorious tendency to dominate the narrative. After FIFA’s eyebrow-raising suspension of Balogun’s ban, the backlash surged—especially as Trump touted the game as “rigged” should things swing south. As the cosmic forces of sportsmanship and integrity clash, it raises an intriguing question about fairness: Is this the new normal in international sports, or just another chapter in Trump’s orbit of influence?

Donald Trump has admitted to calling FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, asking him to “review” a controversial red card shown to USMNT star Folarin Balogun.

One of his former officials now claims that whatever transpired between the US president and Infantino was more on the “intimidation” side, accusing the politician of showing such patterns in the past when he wanted to get his way on issues.

FIFA’s unprecedented decision to suspend Balogun’s one-match ban prompted backlash from several quarters, with Donald Trump’s “rigged” remarks worsening things.

Trump was indeed frustrated after learning of the implications of the red card shown to star striker Folarin Balogun during the 2-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 World Cup.

The penalty, which would have seen Balogun miss out on the team’s now-lost game against Belgium in the round of 16, prompted the president to put a call through to FIFA’s boss asking that the Football body take a second look at it.

FIFA eventually suspended the ban, but a former Trump staff member, Miles Taylor, has alleged that the way the president handled the situation mirrors a familiar pattern of intimidation he’d seen him exhibit before.

Taylor, who was the former Homeland Security chief of staff, went further to accuse the president and his call of corrupting the game “for a generation.”

“The US lost to Belgium on Monday night, and its World Cup is over. But the game is the least of what America lost. With a phone call, a reversed suspension, and a gloating social media post, Donald Trump corrupted international sport for a generation,” Taylor noted in an analysis for The i Paper.

Taylor refused to take Trump’s word about him only seeking an impartial reassessment for face value and went further to describe an incident where he witnessed the president try to force his way through to get what he wanted.

“None of this surprised me, because I saw how Trump dealt with ‘referees’ when I worked for him at the Department of Homeland Security, especially the referees of our democracy, the judges,” he said.

Taylor continued, “Trump would intimidate them publicly on social media, work the higher-ups privately and, when the rulings still went against him, attack their legitimacy.”

Apparently, the billionaire politician also resorts to throwing a fit when he doesn’t get his way, as Taylor described an Oval Office incident where he rammed a fist into his desk.

“I remember one Oval Office meeting, listening to Trump complain that the courts were making him look weak politically by striking down his orders. ‘We need to get rid of the judges,’ he declared, pounding a fist on the desk,” Taylor narrated.

According to the ex-official, Trump allegedly attempted to sidestep Congress and asked his aides to draft proposals for restructuring portions of the federal court system.

“When the umpires ruled against him, the President proposed getting rid of them. A man who thinks that way about federal judges was never going to think differently about a FIFA disciplinary panel,” he added. “FIFA simply proved easier to move than the American judiciary.”

FIFA’s decision to suspend Balogun’s one-match ban drew shouts and criticism from several quarters, with many accusing the body of favoritism and corruption.

After the shocking move, Trump made his stance on the matter clear, admitting that he would have called the game “rigged” if USMNT lost to Belgium without Balogun on the team.

The politician’s comments worsened the backlash online, with many demanding a reversal of FIFA’s decision.

However, when the Royal Belgian Football Association lodged a formal appeal to block Balogun from playing the match, FIFA rejected it. The US ended up losing 4-1 to Belgium in a tense game.

According to The Athletic, a statement from FIFA revealed that the governing body ruled Belgium’s appeal as “inadmissible” on the grounds that “the RBFA is not a party to the proceedings and, as such, has no standing to appeal the decision.”

It remains to be seen if the RBFA plans to take any legal action against FIFA for the incident, as they indicated in a statement that “further actions” were still open to them.

It read, “To date, the RBFA has still not received any grounds for this decision, nor has it received the information it has been requesting since the start of this procedure for a copy of the decision and the motivation declaring the player eligible, as well as the referee’s report. Which is a breach of FIFA regulations.”

“The RBFA has informed the United States Soccer Federation that it contests the eligibility of the player, should the player be listed on the referee’s team sheet. This leaves all further actions open,” the statement added.
