Sharing a personal story such as a fertility journey isn’t always easy, but CJ wanted to share hers in the hopes of letting others know they are not alone.

The well-known WNBA host puts a smile on her face every time she steps onto the court to host an Aces game, but what many don’t realize is that sometimes she’s smiling through the pain.

“I decided to share because I feel like there is a higher percentage of people in our shoes who just suffer in silence,” CJ told The Blast. “If I’m able to help one person through sharing my journey, it’s totally worth it.”

CJ explained that oftentimes, people will share their journeys after they’ve welcomed their baby, but she wanted to share hers as it’s happening because too many others know this rollercoaster firsthand and might feel alone going through it.

She brought us back to the beginning of her journey, a few years ago, and shared some of the moments that many may not have realized she was going through.

“I met my now-husband at 41. We got married at 42. I was 42, he’s a year younger than me. I’ve always been athletic, I played ball my whole life, and always took care of my body, always worked out, eat healthy, did what I needed to do to not get pregnant before I was married,” CJ told The Blast.

“When we decided to try to start a family, I figured, we’re older, but because I’ve taken care of myself and I’ve never had any irregularities with my body or female cycle, it would be easy. But you just don’t know what you don’t know.”

Being Told A Specialist Was Necessary

After getting some tests done, CJ was told she needed to see a specialist for IVF, because she wouldn’t be able to get pregnant naturally. She was quite shocked, because that’s the first time anyone ever suggested that.

“This was the first time I’ve ever heard this. It was a shock to be 42 to hear this and I remember I came home crying, like what is going on,” she continued. “So we did meet with a specialist and she started running tests. We prolonged our honeymoon because the Aces were in the Playoffs, so after the season was over, we went on our honeymoon. Nine days before we were going to start our first cycle of IVF, I found out I was pregnant naturally.”

But sadly, two weeks later, CJ suffered a miscarriage. The miscarriage lasted over a month and was devastating. Not long after, CJ and her husband continued on the journey to start a cycle of IVF. They ended up doing two rounds of IVF with a clinic but found out that instead of looking at each individual person as a different person, the clinic treated the experience like a machine where everyone was treated the same regardless of how their body was reacting to the meds and dosage.

CJ decided to move onto a new clinic and a new doctor after the last experience, and she credits Gabrielle Union for finding the new doctor.

“I was at a friend’s birthday party and ran into Gabrielle Union. We just struck up a conversation and she asked if we had any kids. I word vomited because we just found out that we didn’t have any healthy embryos from a round we did,” CJ explained. “She immediately referred me to the doctor that her and Dwyane Wade used.”

CJ ended up doing about five rounds of IVF with the new doctor and a failed IUI (intrauterine insemination). She also had a miscarriage after getting pregnant naturally between a round.

“And then we finally got to a point where we did an embryo transfer and it took. We were just so ecstatic. It was right in the middle of Aces season, but it took and I was like, okay, this is amazing,” she said. “At 7 weeks, we were supposed to see the heartbeat because we couldn’t see it the week before, but come to find out, there was a hematoma growing beside the pregnancy sac and ended up cutting the blood supply to the embryo. We lost the baby around two months ago.”

Last November, CJ tried another embryo transfer but unfortunately that one didn’t take. Shocked and devastated to have gone through so much, she then is told by a doctor that she might have endometriosis.

“There is really no way to know that someone has endometriosis except for failed transfers or if there is indications of inflammation,” she explained. “It’s crazy that eight years before that, I had gone to three different gynecologists with some pelvic pain, and everyone said you’re normal.”

So, CJ went in for surgery in April and was told she had stage 3 endometriosis and stage 3 adenomyosis, which is a type of endometriosis inside the muscle of the lining of the uterus. She is now about six weeks out of surgery and feels there is new hope.

“We’ll try one more time and I’ll just leave it at that,” she said. “We are still holding onto hope before we move on to whatever else it may take for us to build a family.”

CJ credits her husband, family, friends, and basketball community for all their support throughout the entire journey.

And to help others, she’s in the process of publishing a children’s book that follows five different families and how they’ve created their families, which may not be in a traditional way. The book, “With a Little Help and a Lot of Love,” is currently going through illustrations now and is almost complete.
