Emmy Rossum spent nine seasons baring it all on “Shameless,” but the actress revealed that the role followed her far beyond the set.
During a recent appearance on Maria Sharapova’s “Pretty Tough” podcast, Rossum explained that some men she dated formed assumptions about her based on Fiona Gallagher’s on-screen life.
She also recalled an awkward date with a man who worried that dating an actress known for nude scenes could affect his future political ambitions.
Rossum, who played Fiona Gallagher on the Showtime series, spoke about the show’s impact on her personal life during her appearance on Maria Sharapova’s “Pretty Tough” podcast.
The TV star said the nude and intimate scenes she filmed over the years led some men she dated to form assumptions about her.
“It got quite tricky because of the nudity on the show,” Rossum told Sharapova.
“All of the guys that I would go out with had preconceived notions of who I was or how I was sexually.”
She described the experience as “bizarre” and said she was surprised that people struggled to separate her real identity from the characters she played on screen.
Rossum also shared a story about a man she met on a plane who later took her out on a date.
She described him as “very cute.” However, their conversation eventually turned to his political ambitions and her work on “Shameless.”
“He was like, ‘I really want to be president someday.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, that’s a great goal,’” she said. “He’s like, ‘But I feel like running for office dating someone who’s been exposed in the way that you have — do you think that would be tricky for me?’”
Despite those strange dating experiences, Rossum eventually found a lasting relationship with “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail. The pair met when Esmail directed her in the 2014 romantic comedy “Comet,” and they married in May 2017.
The couple welcomed a daughter in May 2021 and a son in April 2023.
Rossum told Sharapova that shared values drew her to Esmail and shaped how they raised their two children.
“We’re so like-minded,” she said. “We’re so family first. We’re so work second. But also when one person has to work, the other person takes over the family. When I’m working or on tour or making a movie, he’s there for drop-off and pickup.”
The TV star had previously reflected on her first marriage during a July 2026 appearance on “Call Her Daddy.”
She had dated Siegel, then an executive at Interscope Records, for only a few months before leaving for a six-month shoot in Mexico for “Dragonball: Evolution” in 2008.
According to Rossum, Siegel suggested they either end the relationship or get married because he questioned whether it would survive the distance.
She chose marriage, even though she already doubted the relationship.
“At that moment I thought to myself, well, I’m just coming off these two really rough heartbreaks,” she said, explaining that abandonment was a “core wound” for her.
Rossum also admitted she thought about divorce before the wedding. She said her 21-year-old self believed divorce would be “pretty straightforward.”
Rossum said goodbye to “Shameless” in 2019, exiting after its ninth season and nearly a decade as Fiona.
She has continued acting while expanding into behind-the-scenes work.
Her biggest follow-up project was “Angelyne,” a 2022 Peacock limited series about the mysterious, pink-loving Los Angeles billboard star.
In 2023, she also joined Apple TV+’s psychological thriller “The Crowded Room,” playing Candy Sullivan.
She currently serves as an executive producer and plays the lead in the Hulu crime thriller series “Furious,” which was recently renewed for a second season.
