Elon Musk’s former partner Ashley St. Clair is making explosive allegations about the billionaire’s desire to have more children, claiming he spoke about building a “legion” before an anticipated “civil war.” St. Clair, who shares a son with Musk, discusses their relationship in Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney’s nearly four-hour documentary, “Musk.”
The 28-year-old influencer claims Musk encouraged her to have children during the early stages of their relationship and compares his alleged interactions with women to a “Gatling gun of sperm in his DMs.” Musk did not participate in the documentary and has dismissed the film as a “hit piece.”
According to EW, St. Clair’s allegations appear in a chapter of the documentary titled “Legion,” which examines Musk’s approach to fatherhood and his relationships with the mothers of his children. According to St. Clair, Musk told her that he wanted to create a “legion of children” before a future “civil war.”
She said she initially felt apprehensive about having a child with such a polarizing and powerful public figure. St. Clair gave birth to their son, Romulus, in 2024. The child’s existence became public the following year when she announced that Musk was his father.
The Tesla CEO has fathered children with multiple women, including musician Grimes, his former wife Justine Musk, and Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis. Justine also participated in Gibney’s documentary.
Musk has not publicly responded to her newest claims about the alleged “legion” or “civil war” remarks.
St. Clair also discusses the end of their relationship and claims she refused to sign a nondisclosure agreement that became connected to child support discussions. She previously alleged that she was offered $40 million in exchange for signing the agreement and remaining silent.
“When you’re offered something like that, it really causes a debate in your head about what your speech means and how valuable that is, and why do they want to offer me this amount of money to not speak?” St. Clair told reporters at the Venice Film Festival premiere.
Musk disputed the allegation on X, writing, “She was never offered that.” No publicly released agreement has confirmed that St. Clair received the alleged offer. Her account and Musk’s denial remain directly at odds.
St. Clair said her decision was ultimately about showing her children that financial comfort should not take priority over honesty. “I believe Alex spoke to it a little bit, about Elon’s unreality,” she said. “He does have complicated relationships generally, but his most complicated relationship is with the truth.”
She added, “And so I think, most importantly, I want to set the example for my kids that you should never take being materially comfortable over speaking the truth.”
“Musk” traces the billionaire’s life from his childhood in South Africa to his rise as one of the world’s most powerful business figures. The 225-minute film features interviews with people who have personal or professional connections to Musk, including St. Clair, Justine, his father Errol Musk, and Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard. It also examines Musk’s work at SpaceX, his involvement with Tesla, his acquisition of Twitter and his influence during the 2024 presidential election.
Gibney told Reuters that the documentary was originally expected to last approximately two hours. It expanded significantly as Musk became more politically involved and developed a close relationship with President Donald Trump.
Musk declined Gibney’s requests to participate. The documentary instead uses artificial intelligence to create a simulated interview assembled from statements Musk has made publicly.
During a question-and-answer session at the Toronto International Film Festival, Gibney pushed back when an audience member asked whether he would rather live in a world without Musk’s accomplishments. “Well, first of all, I kind of question the phrase, ‘the accomplishments of Elon Musk,’” the filmmaker responded.
Gibney then highlighted the work of other people involved in Musk’s companies. “Tesla was not founded by Elon Musk. He wasn’t the key inventor. SpaceX also was founded by a lot of powerful and important engineers,” he said.
Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning incorporated Tesla in 2003 before Musk became the company’s largest early investor and chairman. Following a legal settlement, Musk and four others were permitted to identify themselves as Tesla co-founders.
Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, although the company’s development has involved teams of engineers and other executives. Gibney’s comments reflect his broader argument that Musk’s public image can overshadow the contributions of other people.
Musk and his legal team have strongly objected to the documentary’s portrayal of his business and political activity. Gibney told the TIFF audience that Musk “threatened to sue us” over the film. “So, that should give you some sense of how much, at least so far, the free speech absolutist is encouraging speech that he doesn’t like,” he added.
Musk’s attorney, Alex Spiro, has reportedly raised concerns about how the documentary addresses claims that Starlink may have influenced the 2024 presidential election.
Spiro denied that Starlink was connected to vote tabulation and accused the filmmakers of creating a misleading implication without credible evidence. Election officials and cybersecurity experts have also rejected claims that Starlink was used to manipulate vote totals.
Jigsaw Productions, Gibney’s company, has defended the film as a fact-based investigation protected by the First Amendment. Musk has continued attacking the project despite Gibney’s assertion that the billionaire has not watched it.
After screenings at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, “Musk” is scheduled to arrive in theaters in October.
