Elijah Wood recently aired his grievances about the new QR code ordering system at Alamo Drafthouse, branding it as “truly awful.” After enjoying a delightful chat about the upcoming animated series Among Us, it seems the stars have aligned for Wood not only to express his discontent but to summon the collective voice of moviegoers rallying against this tech-induced frustration. With Mercury retrograde throwing a wrench into communication systems everywhere, could it be any more inconvenient when you’re fumbling with your phone mid-movie instead of savoring those nachos in peace? Who needs extra steps when all you want is popcorn, am I right? The backlash from Wood’s followers echoes a sentiment familiar to many: let’s keep the nostalgia alive and revert to good old-fashioned ordering! Curious about his fiery remarks? LEARN MORE.
Elijah Wood, whom I recently talked to for Paramount’s upcoming Among Us animated series (video coming soon) and who was an absolute delight, is not happy with the new QR code ordering program at Alamo Drafthouse. This afternoon, Wood put Alamo Drafthouse on blast, calling the boutique theater’s new concession ordering method “truly awful.” Check out Wood’s comments below:
“For the first time yesterday, I experienced the new @alamodrafthouse QR code ordering system and I can tell you it’s truly awful. Rather than making ordering food and drink more efficient, it actually adds steps to the process AND if you want to order additional items during the film you HAVE to open your phone. No, your cute reference to that irony in your How To Alamo video doesn’t negate how ridiculous this is. Please don’t cut corners with your staff and revert back to physical menus and order cards.”
A lot of Wood’s followers are rallying with him in the comments about Alamo Drafthouse’s new QR code ordering system, saying they’ve experienced similar frustrations and want the theater to revert to the old system. “Taking out my phone to order a refill? I’d rather just be thirsty,” one commenter wrote. In contrast, another wrote that a mistake with your order requires you to pull out your phone in the middle of the movie to show proof of purchase, detracting from the overall moviegoing experience. Another follower alleges that the owners of Alamo Drafthouse terminated her fiancée and others on the IT team after warnings about poor infrastructure and customer resistance to the new QR code program. Hearsay or not, it sounds like Alamo Drafthouse has some wrinkles to iron out with its new ordering system.
I have a lot of thoughts about the theatergoing experience, and how people can help make trips to the movies more enjoyable for everyone. Click here to read JoBlo’s Guide to Movie Theater Etiquette, which, in hindsight, could be a much bigger article. As for today’s story, I stand with Elijah Wood and the rest of the moviegoing public when I say leave the concessions experience alone. The VIP ordering system is already distracting, but, thankfully, the staff is usually efficient at getting in and out of the theater with orders before the movie truly starts. Still, QR code ordering is not the way, Alamo Drafthouse. Why you would spend all this time, money, and effort changing something that’s not broken in the first place, I’ll never know, but I’m sure it has something to do with money.
