Now, an unexpected moment of compassion at the 2026 Emmy Awards has given the “Today” anchor another chance to renew a plea she refuses to let the world forget.
The emotional moment began with Allison Janney, who had just celebrated winning her eighth acting Emmy for her performance in “The Diplomat.”
Speaking backstage, Janney shifted attention away from her own victory to Savannah and her missing mother.
“I honestly can say I think about her every day and think about the loss and what Savannah and her family are going through,” Janney said. “I don’t think I’m alone too. I think all of America was thinking about her.”
When the comments were played on “Today” the following morning, Savannah was visibly moved.
“Yeah, I was so touched to see her do that,” she said per PEOPLE, noting that Janney had used a moment of personal triumph to think about another family’s pain.
Savannah then seized the opportunity to renew her appeal.
“I never let a moment pass, if I get one, to talk about my mom and how much we miss her and love her,” she explained. “My whole family, my sister and my brother and I and all of our extended families, we’re in such pain. We need help.”
She ended with an especially heartbreaking request: “We just want our mom home, give her a proper goodbye. That’s all.”
Savannah’s latest words did not come out of nowhere. At the six-month mark of Nancy’s disappearance, the journalist described a family attempting to keep functioning despite being consumed by unanswered questions.
“Every day, we wake up and try to be strong and go on — because that’s what our joyful and resilient Mom taught us to do,” she wrote, before admitting, “But make no mistake — our hearts are in ruins.”
Savannah said the family spent “every waking moment” thinking about, longing for and searching for Nancy.
Their goal, she explained, was to discover what happened so they could eventually give their mother “the dignity of a proper goodbye.”
That need for answers became even more painful after authorities released two ransom notes connected to the investigation. One claimed Nancy had died shortly after being taken.
However, that claim has not been independently established. Investigators have spent months sorting potentially legitimate communications from apparent extortion attempts, and Nancy’s whereabouts remain unknown.
The FBI continues to list Nancy as a missing person and is seeking information that could lead to her recovery or identify anyone responsible for her disappearance.
Amid their own ordeal, the Guthries made a decision that broadened the search into something larger than their family.
In February, Savannah announced a privately funded reward of up to $1 million for information leading to Nancy’s recovery.
However, the family didn’t stop there. They also pledged $500,000 to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, hoping the extraordinary attention surrounding Nancy’s case could benefit families whose missing loved ones never receive the same national spotlight.
“We also know that we are not alone in our loss,” Savannah explained at the time.
She said millions of families have endured similar uncertainty and expressed hope that the attention given to Nancy would extend to others who “need prayers and need support.”
Savannah Guthrie has also been candid about what has allowed her to keep moving forward without the certainty she desperately wants.
During her first extensive television interview after Nancy disappeared, she revealed that her Christian faith had become a source of comfort.
At one particularly difficult point, Savannah recalled praying that she could endure almost anything except not knowing where her mother was.
She later described feeling spiritually reassured that, whether Nancy remained alive or had died, her mother was ultimately in God’s care.
“My faith is strong and resolute,” Savannah said per PEOPLE. That belief has not stopped her from seeking answers.
Months later, she promised that the family would “never stop looking for answers” and would continue “hoping and praying and believing in the best of our world — in spite of circumstance.”
“This is what our faith makes possible,” she added.
Even her appeals to whoever may know what happened have reflected that outlook. In an earlier plea, Savannah said she had “no anger” in her heart and instead offered the possibility of “love and forgiveness” to someone willing to finally tell the truth.
Seven months after the disappearance, Nancy continues to surface in moments that would ordinarily have little to do with the investigation.
Just days before Savannah’s latest plea, “Today” announced that its hosts will travel to Ireland in October for a special broadcast.
For Savannah, the trip carries a deeply personal connection. “I’ve never been to Ireland,” she said while discussing the journey. “My mother’s family, my mother was Irish. Her grandmother, they’re from Galway.”
The seemingly small comment was another reminder of how closely Nancy remains woven into her daughter’s everyday life.
