Who is really after RJ and his family?

As far as cases go, RJ Decker Season 1 Episode 6 was a twisty one, as RJ thought he was investigating a murder, all the while not realizing that he was getting framed for it.

But as things escalated, it left us with the sinking realization that someone else entirely was coming after RJ and/or his family.

(Disney/John Merrick)

RJ only ever wants to do his job well. He does his due diligence, too, but then there’s always someone coming along to screw with him.

Leave him alone, dammit! If he didn’t have bad luck, he wouldn’t have any at all.

What I’m shocked by is that Brenner and his girlfriend would have RJ fully investigating a murder that they committed in the first place.

It seemed way too risky to do, especially since they did their own reconnaissance and found out he was close to a cop. Wouldn’t they be concerned that he had connections that could backfire on them?

We got deep into a case that involved armed heists of money trucks, and we learned that part of the running theory was that Huck got murdered because he learned about the heist and was trying to warn people.

It all seemed like solid theory and worthwhile investigation to prove, but then Brenner entered the equation. The smartest thing probably would’ve been if Brenner stayed under the radar to exact his revenge, but alas, some criminals just aren’t too bright.

(Disney/John Merrick)

We should’ve known that RJ didn’t make it through prison without butting heads with people and pissing them off.

He’s just so noble, so of course he would have actively put himself in harm’s way to protect another inmate, and ended up in Brenner’s crosshairs as a result.

Because he goaded Brenner into punching him in front of a guard, Brenner got an additional nine months added to his sentence because he had already struck out twice.

So, for reasons that only go back to sheer stupidity, Brenner decided that the BEST thing to do the moment he got out of prison was to exact revenge on RJ.

But shouldn’t the revenge fit the action? Brenner and his two-faced girlfriend really opted to frame RJ for armed robbery and murder! He would’ve gone to prison forever after that!

Did Brenner really think that was justifiable? That’s wild!

(Disney/John Merrick)

My heart sank the exact moment RJ realized that Brenner had framed him by leaving the missing shirt and putting the doblooms in his trailer.

Given that RJ’s on parole, it would’ve ruined him even if he did somehow convince people he wasn’t guilty of the murder or robbery.

But the most rattling aspect of it all was when he learned that someone had broken into Cath and Mel’s house. He went through the trouble of leaving their place to protect them, and someone still ransacked their home, violated their space, and scared the daylights out of everyone.

I hated it for so many reasons, one of which was that once Mel found out, she would likely blame RJ. She’s been worried about the trouble he could bring to their doorstep for some time.

But Mel was a TRUE BADASS when she tracked Brenner down at his little halfway house and threatened him. Mama Bear meant BUSINESS.

(Disney/John Merrick)

You could believe every last bit of that threat when she said that he wouldn’t be going to prison if he came after her family again. He’d definitely be meeting his maker if Mel had anything to do with it.

It was such a great moment. She doesn’t play about her family, and that’s been abundantly clear from the beginning.

But this is where it gets stressful because, despite Brenner being a piece of garbage, I believed him in that moment when he said he didn’t ransack her home. And now he’s saying it again.

He’s not behind the break-in and is going through the entire house. Brenner got what he needed from RJ’s trailer, so he didn’t need to go to his ex-wife’s home.

Besides, it would’ve been too risky for him to do — going to a cop’s place.

(Disney/John Merrick)

But that means someone else is after them, and the uncertainty of the unknown with that is too stressful. Here’s my thing: Do we believe it’s someone who has beef with RJ or someone else altogether?

Sure, it’s possible that someone else RJ angered could be coming after him and hitting him where it hurts: his family.

But then we have to consider that both Mel and Cath have dangerous jobs, too, and it’s likely they’re ticked off the wrong people, too.

Mel is a cop; she crosses paths with criminals every day who may have a vendetta against her.

And Cath is a great journalist, way too good at her job, and that could easily invite all sorts of trouble. Someone didn’t just break into their home, but they were looking for something.

Also, did anyone else wonder if Mel was looking at the floorboards af if she had something hidden under there? I didn’t get the impression that she was touching a wet spot from a cup that spilled something.

(Disney/Dana Hawley)

Mel may be withholding something, and that intrigues me. Whatever the case, this is only the beginning of someone coming after RJ’s family, and that can’t stand!

It’s a stressful turn of events, and they’ve piqued my interest with this one.

Also, let’s take a moment to appreciate how much of a ride-or-die Emi has been with RJ! She just genuinely cares about him so much, and she’s struggling to contain it.

I don’t even think he realizes how much she cares about him.

She’s just so interested and fascinated by his entire world and how he goes about his day, and she’s so earnest when it comes to helping him as much as she can. Half the time, he doesn’t even have to ask; she does it.

(Disney/John Merrick)

A large part of that is her guilt, of course.

When he explained to her what happened in prison and gave some personal insight that only comes from someone who navigated the prison life, you could tell she once again felt bad because she put him in that situation in the first place.

The idea that someone could be after him because of an experience she’s responsible for got under her skin.

And her offers never quit.

She didn’t hesitate when offering up the lot so he could get into his trailer. And she was worried sick about the frame job and offered up her own apartment for him to stay at. That goes beyond just wanting to make things right — that’s deeper feelings at play.

(Disney/John Merrick)

And we almost got them a more meaningful moment than the first time they hooked up.

The chemistry was crackling in that trailer. They were so close to a kiss before that call interrupted them.

It’s fascinating because Emi, on the surface, seems so out of place in RJ Decker’s world, in his small, humble trailer, or his simple surroundings.

But she also seems to have this yearning for it, as if there’s something freeing about his simplicity that she craves.

You could tell she was disappointed when their dinner plans fell through. It’s like she wants to jump on those moments when they come up, and then she pulls back a bit.

It’s been interesting seeing Emi try to figure out where she fits in within RJ’s life and world. This dynamic keeps quietly building, and I’m curious to see where it heads.

Emis is still an enigma, but what’s abundantly clear is how strong her feelings are for RJ.
