In a world where the stars seem to align just right for some, Chief Keef shines as a classic example of cosmic favor. Seriously, how many other artists break into the hip-hop scene at 16 and effortlessly shape the future of a genre? As we orbit around the buzzworthy news of a Cole Bennett-directed documentary chronicling Keef’s wild journey, one can’t help but wonder: is it just a coincidence that this news drops as Mercury dances backwards in retrograde? Or is the universe sending us a sign about the magic of timing and storytelling? Get ready, because this ain’t just another doc—it’s the chronicle of a young legend whose impact reaches far beyond Chicago and into the very fabric of hip-hop itself. Buckle up, folks! 2027 may seem lightyears away, but when it comes to epic stories like Keef’s, it’ll fly by faster than a comet!
Chicago’s Chief Keef is arguably one of hip-hop’s youngest legends, breaking out at 16 and instantly becoming an influential figure. Of course, it’s no surprise that his life and career would one day be the subject of a Cole Bennett-directed documentary. The Lyrical Lemonade creative has worked with Sosa extensively in the past, and he has a promising update on when fans can expect this deep-dive.
Speaking at ComplexCon, Bennett (who is also from Illinois) spoke on the documentary potentially coming out in 2027. The director and others have spoken in the past about its focus on Keef’s rise, hiatus, return to Chicago, and the multiple threads of influence running to and from Chief, Chicago, and hip-hop as a whole.
“The Chief Keef documentary is something that I think is super important to the both of us,” Cole Bennett remarked. “And it’s an important story that you have to tell right. We’ve just been taking our time to make sure that we can craft it the way it needs to be told. It’s one of those stories where it’s already written. You just got to take the time to tell it in the right way… I would like to say… I would like to say it would come out in 2027.”
This documentary first came to light in 2024. Furthermore, it follows Apple Music’s previous 2017 announcement about a documentary in development called The Story Of Sosa. Sadly, that idea got scrapped. Fortunately, Cole Bennett is reviving the chance of seeing the 31-year-old’s story in a feature or series format.
Furthermore, Bennett’s specific Keef doc involved a partnership with Kenya Barris’ Khalabo Ink Society. In 2024, the director told Complex about their initial ideas. “So we’ve been bouncing some ideas on how we structure what this story looks like, but we’re documenting it in its entirety and building out a story that is viewable and digestible for the world. I think this is such an inspiring story,” he reportedly remarked.
