Owens has taken her public campaign against Erika to another level by calling out Hillsdale College’s decision to award her an honorary doctorate of public service. The recognition was granted during the school’s recent commencement ceremony.
The conservative commentator raised the issue on the latest episode of “The Candace Owens Show.” The episode followed a viral social media post from user Brian Allen arguing that the honor was conferred only on Erika because she was married to Charlie, not because she had earned it.
Owens partly agreed with Allen’s characterization of the award as “hypocritical,” while adding that honorary doctorates are generally given in recognition of credible achievements, not simply for delivering a commencement speech.
On her YouTube channel, Owens reviewed what she described as Erika’s résumé and said she was at a loss as to the specific reason Hillsdale chose to confer the honor on her.
Owens’ critique follows public backlash against the award, as critics called Erika a “hypocrite” for accepting the honor despite Charlie’s years-long “The College Scam” campaign. The popular catchphrase generally urged young Americans to walk away from traditional four-year degrees.

Furthermore, during her speech, Erika encouraged the graduates to follow in her late husband’s footsteps and pattern their lives after him, urging them to pursue truth and “defend liberty” as he did.
“As you continue forward in life, I want you to kind of embrace the similar blueprint of my husband, where he loved to point out that God made us purposeful beings and continue forward in life with clarity and intention,” she said.
Erika also urged female graduates to marry young, telling them they are “called to nurture, to build, to shape lives with wisdom and endurance.” Her remarks were met with pushback, however, with some social media users accusing her of hypocrisy.
Charlie was killed during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University in Utah last September. Earlier this month, Erika took to social media to share a moving tribute to him in honor of what would have been their fifth wedding anniversary.
Alongside a nostalgic video from their wedding day, Erika professed her love for Charlie and explained that their marriage meant more to her than a legal contract.
“When I stood at that altar with you, we made a covenant with God,” Erika wrote. “Two becoming one with the Lord Himself at the center of our vow… binding us under the eternal.”
She acknowledged that his absence still “aches,” but said God has remained her constant sustainer and has not left her alone. Reflecting on the brevity of their time together, Erika wrote that the days she spent loving and living with him on earth “pales to the amount of days” she believes she will spend with him in eternity.
