“Dancing With the Stars” Season 35 marks Ezra Sosa’s third year as a full-time professional dancer on the reality competition, and he is sharing what would make his career even more fulfilling.

In an interview with Out magazine, the 25-year-old said he wants a male partner in a future season of the show. “I’m working my magic! I definitely want that 100% to happen,” he said, noting that he has had his sights set on the goal since being part of the show.

“I’ve been so passionate about same-sex dancing in general, especially being part of the queer community,” Sosa shared, noting that he already told the show’s casting director his wish. “We’ll see what happens over time.”

‘Dancing With The Stars’ History Of Same-Sex Pairs

Sosa’s dream isn’t impossible, as same-sex pairings have appeared on “DWTS” in past seasons, showing the competition isn’t limited to traditional male-female pairings.

The first same-sex pairing was in Season 30 in 2021, when “Dance Moms” alum JoJo Siwa was paired with pro dancer Jenna Johnson. At the time, the show released a statement saying it was a milestone decision that brought “visibility to the ballroom.”

The historic same-sex partnership was followed by Shangela and Gleb Savchenko’s male-male pairing in Season 32. The former, real name DJ Pierce, identifies as a cisgender male when not in drag, and said he had no reservations about the male-male partnership because of his pro partner’s immense support.

The current season also had a female-female pairing with Sarah Jane Nader and her professional partner Hailey Bills, but they were eliminated in Week 1.

Inside Ezra Sosa’s ‘DWTS’ Journey

Sosa joined “DWTS” in 2021 as part of the show’s dance troupe and a stand-by professional dancer. In 2023, he stepped in on Week 2 and performed with contestant Charity Lawson after her pro partner, Artem Chigvintsev, tested positive for COVID.

Sosa was promoted to a full-time pro on Season 33 in 2024, and he was partnered with convicted con artist Anna Delvey. The pair was eliminated on Week 2.

In Season 34, Sosa was paired with Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles, and the two made it all the way to the finale, finishing in third place.

Currently, Sosa is paired with actress Julia Stiles. While the pair has been a fan favorite, they currently sit near the bottom of the leaderboard.

The Dancer Grew Up In A Conservative Mormon Household

The Provo, Utah, native was raised in a Mormon household with an Argentine father and Mexican mother. Sosa revealed that he had a tough time, telling E! News that he was “shoved into a box” and had days when he was kicked out of the home because of his sexuality.

Dance became his form of outlet, saying, “I was able to go to a dance studio, play some music, and I was able to express myself in ways that words couldn’t.” Choreographer Talia Favia became a mother figure to him during the difficult period.

Sosa eventually left his home for good and relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a dance career. His parents have since divorced, and he has healed his relationship with his mother, but is estranged from his father.

At one point, Sosa was concerned about being an openly gay pro dancer on “DWTS” because some people who weren’t affiliated with the show expressed their concerns.

In 2021, JoJo Siwa, who became Sosa’s close friend, accidentally outed him on Instagram Live. Ultimately, that led to the dancer confronting his fears and gaining the confidence to be his authentic self in public. He came out to the “DWTS” producers and found out that his fears had been unfounded, receiving massive support.

Sosa was the second openly gay pro dancer on the show, following former pro Louis van Amstel, and the first openly gay Latino pro to join the series.

“Representation truly does matter. When I joined the show, I never thought there would be a space for an openly gay pro to be on ‘Dancing With the Stars. I’m very lucky to be here,” Sosa told Out.
