The filmmakers behind one of the biggest horror success stories of the last few years have lined up another major genre project. According to Jeff Sneider at The InSneider, Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky have been hired to direct a new feature adaptation of Stephen King’s 1996 novel Desperation, with Sam Raimi producing. Searchlight Pictures is backing the project, and King is also said to be involved.
Desperation was previously adapted as a television movie in 2006, with Ron Perlman, Tom Skerritt, Steven Weber, Annabeth Gish, Henry Thomas, and Matt Frewer leading the cast. This new version will be the first theatrical feature based on the novel.
Set along a desolate stretch of Highway 50 in Nevada, Desperation follows a group of strangers who are rounded up by the deputy of the nearly abandoned mining town of Desperation. Before long, they discover that the seemingly deranged lawman has been possessed by an ancient supernatural entity known as Tak, forcing them into a desperate battle to survive and stop the evil before it spreads beyond the isolated desert town.
The novel was released alongside King’s companion book, The Regulators. Although the books feature many of the same characters, they tell completely different stories in alternate realities.
The announcement continues an incredible run for Stein and Lipovsky, who have quickly become two of Hollywood’s most in-demand genre filmmakers.
After earning acclaim with the 2018 sci-fi thriller Freaks, the duo scored their biggest hit yet with Final Destination: Bloodlines, revitalizing the long-running horror franchise for a new generation of fans. Since then, their schedule has filled up with major studio projects. They’re currently writing Gremlins 3 alongside Chris Columbus, who is also set to direct and produce, with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. They’re directing Sony Pictures’ animated Venom movie, have signed a first-look deal with Sony that includes the original sci-fi feature The Earthling and a Metal Gear Solid adaptation, and will soon see Freaks Part II premiere as the closing film of this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival.
Adding a Stephen King adaptation produced by Sam Raimi to that growing résumé further cements Stein and Lipovsky as one of the hottest directing teams working in genre entertainment today.
The collaboration also carries a bit of horror history with it. Long before The Evil Dead became a cult classic, Stephen King championed Sam Raimi’s low-budget debut. Raimi has frequently credited King’s praise with helping the film reach a much wider audience, making this new partnership feel like a fitting full-circle moment more than four decades later.
Searchlight Pictures has not announced a release date, casting, or production timeline for Desperation, but with Raimi producing and Stein and Lipovsky behind the camera, this is already shaping up to be an intriguing Stephen King adaptation.
