The Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty renewed their rivalry Thursday night in a high-stakes matchup in Las Vegas.
With the Aces looking to continue their second-half push and the Liberty battling to strengthen their position in the standings, the showdown delivered another memorable chapter between two powerhouse teams, with plenty of star power, intensity, and playoff implications on the line.
Thursday’s game celebrated Legacy Night and was the 60th consecutive sellout at The House.
Another high-energy game between the Aces and the Liberty had fans filling the Michelob ULTRA Arena inside Mandalay Bay with excitement and anticipation. Fans were especially excited to see NaLyssa Smith back after missing the last game due to illness.
A’ja Wilson led the way with 33 points and 10 rebounds, Jackie Young had an impressive all-around performance with 27 points and 9 assists, and Chelsea Gray added 16 points. The Aces beat the Liberty 104-99.
For the Liberty, Breanna Stewart had 26 points and 11 rebounds and moved into the tenth spot on the WNBA’s career scoring list. Sabrina Ionescu scored 15 points, Rebecca Allen had 13, and rookie Pauline Astier finished with a career-high 19 points.
During the postgame press conference, head coach Becky Hammon gave some insight into playing the Liberty.
“I think every opportunity we play somebody in the regular season is the opportunity to learn more about them. This is gonna be a playoff team, so I’m sure they’re side is taking notes, we’re taking notes,” she told the media. “We’re always in the information gathering stage in the regular season. We have a lot of respect for New York from top to bottom. I think you get two really locked in teams.”
She also spoke a little about the Aces’ resilience.
“Resiliency is essential part of any championship team, part of any great team,” she said. “You have to have resiliency. There are moments in the game that get hard, off the court things that get hard that can affect maybe different areas, so you always have to have that toughness and the bounce back factor. We’re gonna make mistakes; it’s how we respond after that.”
Thursday night’s game was the second of three Aces “Legacy Night” games to celebrate the 30th WNBA season. The game celebrated the franchise’s Utah Starzz era, as one of the original eight WNBA teams that began the league in 1997.
According to a press release sent to The Blast from the Aces, “The Starzz improved their win totals in each of their six seasons in Utah, made the playoffs the last two years, and advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2002.”
To further celebrate, the first 7,500 fans in attendance on Thursday received an exclusive Aces 30th season hat.
Mai Yamamoto debuted with the Aces on Tuesday night against Portland Fire. The team shared a fun fact about her debut on Instagram.
“With her @lvaces debut, Mai Yamamoto becomes the 5th Japanese player to play in the WNBA,” they wrote.
In addition to Yamamoto making her Aces debut, Ta’Niya Latson, a developmental player from Los Angeles before signing a developmental player contract with the Aces, also played her first game in an Aces uniform on Tuesday against the Fire.
The Aces are about to head out for a five-game road trip beginning on Saturday, Aug. 1 when they play the Chicago Sky. On Monday, Aug. 3, it’s time to face the Atlanta Dream before heading to Indianapolis to take on the Indiana Fever on Aug. 6. On Saturday, Aug. 8, they’ll battle the Minnesota Lynx, and then it’s off to Brooklyn to face the New York Liberty on Sunday, Aug. 9.
