Hayden Panettiere‘s final movie, “Sleepwalker,” came after a decades-long career that saw her grow up in Hollywood. The psychological thriller, released in January, gave the actress a challenging role as a grieving mother dealing with episodes of sleepwalking.

Following the actress’ death at 36 years old, her co-star, Justin Chatwin, is opening up about their time together on set, saying he could tell the actress was “struggling” and appeared “lonely.”

Tributes from co-stars and the entertainment industry have been pouring in following news of Hayden Panettiere’s death at just 36 years old.

The actress began her career as a child actress, appearing on TV shows and films before becoming a household name through roles in “Heroes” and “Nashville.” Her final role came in the psychological thriller “Sleepwalker,” released in January 2026.

Panettiere’s co-star, Justin Chatwin, who portrayed the actress’ husband in the film, fondly remembers the actress, telling PEOPLE that they “hit it off great.” However, he also noticed the actress “was struggling.”

“There’s a handful of women that I’ve worked with that I really liked, and I really loved working with her, but I also know that she was really lonely,” Chatwin recalled.

Chatwin shared that Panettiere “opened up” to him about her life, and he believes the movie’s subject may have brought some of the actress’ personal experiences to mind. “It was about domestic abuse, and it was subject matter that may have hit close to home, because she did mention it,” Chatwin said.

“Hayden seemed different when I met her this time than when I met her in the early years,” the actor continued, adding, “I’ve been sober for 15 years, so I know this world of addiction, and Hollywood – it takes, and it takes from youth.”

Panettiere had been open about her struggles with substance abuse and alcoholism. She also experienced postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter in 2014, as reported by The Blast.

Chatwin said Panettiere opened up to him about going to rehab and her traumatic experiences, describing her as a “sweet person” with a “beautiful heart.” However, he also acknowledged that as actors, they were trained to “be on” while on set.

“I really liked spending time with her because she took that off, and she was authentic with me about her life, and she opened up about her struggles with addiction,” Chatwin said.

In “Sleepwalker,” Panettiere played Sarah Pangborn, a grieving artist who lost her daughter to a car crash that also left her abusive husband in a coma. It tackles subjects such as survivor’s guilt, domestic abuse, and trauma.

In 2020, the actress publicly spoke about abuse after her then-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was arrested for domestic violence and battery after punching Panettiere. She also detailed the incident in her memoir, per The Blast.

The Actress Pulled From Her Experiences To Play The Character

Panettiere discussed her role in an interview in January, sharing that she felt drawn to playing characters that have been through trauma because she related to them.

In portraying Sarah, she channeled her personal experiences into the role. “Guilt and loss, they’re topics that I’m familiar with, so I had a lot to pull from my real life,” Panettiere told Moviefone. The actress acknowledged that the movie tackled dark subject matter, but also serving as the executive producer kept her mind busy.

In a separate interview, Panettiere said that while it was taxing to film emotional scenes, it was worth it. “Keeping that level of heightened emotions and staying in such a dark emotional place definitely is challenging and can be exhausting, but is ultimately rewarding for me,” she told Fox News.

Hayden Panettiere Described As ‘Complex’ And ‘Introspective’

“Sleepwalker” director Brandon Auman mourned the actress’ passing, sharing how Panettiere was “open and honest” about her life and how she connected with her character. “I was struck by how complex and deeply introspective she was. She lived a dozen lives in one short beautiful life. I’ll miss her forever,” he said.

On August 16, emergency responders arrived at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, and found Panettiere unresponsive. She was declared deceased after exhausting all life-saving protocols. The preliminary autopsy showed no signs of trauma or foul play, but an official cause and manner of death have yet to be released.
