Journalist Jonathan Van Meter spent five years gaining insight into the life of reality TV star and businesswoman Kim Kardashian for the upcoming authorized biography “Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future,” but there was one person he wasn’t able to talk to: Paris Hilton.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Van Meter discussed the possibility with Kardashian, who reached out to the socialite, and Hilton agreed to participate. However, the author said he had to go through her publicist and was eventually put in touch with her assistant. He sent over the questions he wanted to ask, but his attempt to reach out ultimately led nowhere.

“The interview was canceled 17 times over about four months. Eventually I thought the cancellations were more interesting than whatever she’d tell me,” Van Meter told the publication.

The Reality Star Was Reportedly ‘Mad’ About The Outcome

Van Meter told Kardashian about what happened, and she was reportedly “so mad.”

“It seemed to stir up some ancient irritation between them. The creation turning on the creator,” he said.

Before “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” debuted in 2007, the SKIMS founder had a recurring appearance on Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie’s reality series “The Simple Life.” Kardashian worked as Hilton’s wardrobe assistant, stylist, and closet organizer, often accompanying her to high-profile gatherings, including celebrity parties and red-carpet events, which increased her own public exposure.

A source from Hilton offered insight behind the cancellations with Van Meter, saying that the author communicated with “an old assistant at Paris’s company,” adding that the correspondence was overlooked due to the socialite’s “incredibly hectic schedule.”

The source noted that Hilton is involved in many projects that are happening all at once, and scheduling interviews “can sometimes be a challenge.”

As for how Kardashian reacted, the source said that she isn’t mad about the situation. “In fact, she and Paris are both involved in each other’s upcoming projects and continue to always support one another,” the insider said, per PEOPLE.

Kim Kardashian And Paris Hilton Had A Falling Out

Following the success of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” the two women started drifting apart, with reports saying there was tension between them due to Kardashian rising to fame.

In 2008, Hilton bashed Kardashian’s backside during a radio interview, describing it as “gross,” adding, “It reminds me of cottage cheese inside a big trash bag.”

The following year, Kardashian addressed the remark in an interview with Howard Stern, revealing that it had affected their relationship and that she hadn’t spoken to Hilton “in a few years.” In a separate interview in 2011, Kardashian said they had simply grown apart and that she eventually realized they didn’t have much in common.

They have since reconciled privately and put their differences behind them. In the years that followed, they were spotted together at parties and even collaborated on professional projects.

Kanye West Was Also Not Interviewed For Kim’s Biography

Kardashian’s ex-husband, Kanye West, was also not interviewed for the biography, revealed Van Meter. The author acknowledged that the rapper was “central” to Kardashian’s life as the father of her four children and her partner for nearly a decade, including seven years of marriage.

Although Kardashian told Van Meter that West was willing to talk to him for the book, he felt it wasn’t right. “As his behavior grew more troubling, I didn’t think it would be ethical to interview somebody in the middle of a mental health crisis,” Van Meter explained, adding that West’s antisemitic rants might “ruin the book.”

“In a way, his absence kept the focus on her story,” he said.

“Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future” will be released on October 27.
