Resharing Entertainment Weekly’s report, McCain made clear that she had seen the requests for a reaction. “You guys keep asking me for a response and for real, I’m not fighting with an 84-year-old,” she wrote. “She can say whatever she wants at her stage in life.”
McCain did not directly dispute Behar’s account of their working relationship or revisit their on-air arguments in the message.
The latest round of drama began with Joy Behar’s Vulture interview, published Friday. Reflecting on nearly three decades at “The View,” Behar praised the people currently sharing the table with her. “This group now is very good,” she said. “They all have a sense of humor. Nobody’s mean over there. Over the years, there’s been a couple of little mean girls.”
Behar did not identify which former co-hosts she meant. Still, the interview also addressed her history with McCain, whose time on the daytime show included several heated exchanges with the longtime panelist.
One of their most memorable clashes happened in January 2021, after McCain returned from maternity leave. During an on-air exchange, Behar told McCain she “did not miss” her.
McCain later described the moment as particularly painful because she was already struggling with postpartum anxiety and feeling uncertain about returning to television. “I had postpartum anxiety. When I was back, I was really nervous. It was like starting TV all over again. I felt unsteady. I was trying to make a joke, ‘You missed me so much.’ If you watch the clip, her reaction is very sharp,” McCain told Variety in October 2021.
She said she experienced a “panic attack” and began lactating after the encounter. McCain has described the exchange as a factor in her decision to exit “The View” later that year.
Behar offered a different perspective when Vulture asked about the rift. “I thought, ‘Well, good for you if that’s the worst thing anybody said to you,’” she said of the on-air fight.
She also characterized their relationship as cordial, even if they were not especially close outside work, saying, “I wouldn’t say we were having dinner every night, but we got along fine.”
Her recollection contrasts with the distress McCain previously described. For Behar, the exchange did not appear to define their entire working relationship. For McCain, it became part of her explanation for walking away.
This time, McCain has chosen a much shorter response than the detailed account she gave after leaving the show. Her reshared report and accompanying message addressed the renewed attention without offering another lengthy defense of her experience.
Behar, meanwhile, has praised the current panel while acknowledging that not every past combination of personalities worked as comfortably.
