Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly taking their Netflix slate in a gritty new direction with an Afghan war drama titled “No Way Out.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to be working on the new feature film in collaboration with Matt Charman, despite rumors that their relationship with the global streamer had cooled after their deal was downgraded to a “first look” arrangement.

The reported project also comes ahead of the couple’s wedding anniversary next week, amid claims that they are planning a vow renewal reportedly linked to a reality TV-style show in the pipeline.

Harry and Meghan, under their Archewell Productions banner, are reportedly developing a feature film adaptation of the bestselling Afghanistan war memoir, “No Way Out: The Searing True Story of Men Under Siege,” for Netflix, per Deadline.

The book tells the story of “Easy Company,” a hastily assembled, understrength unit of British Paratroopers and Royal Irish Rangers tasked with holding a strategic district in Helmand province during the war.

They soon found themselves completely cut off, heavily outnumbered, and subjected to 21 days of relentless assaults by the Taliban. Published in 2019 by Major Adam Jowett, who led the unit, the book provides a firsthand account of the 2006 battle and is now reportedly being adapted for the screen by Harry and Meghan.

Harry And Meghan’s War Drama Gets Major Hollywood Help

In the book, Jowett describes what it feels like to carry responsibility for the lives of men facing death, with the odds of survival near zero. However, just as they came down to their last rounds of ammunition and death seemed inevitable, things took a turn.

Harry and Meghan also have elite Hollywood talent helping them bring the war memoir to life. According to the news outlet, they will be working on the script with Charman, the Oscar-nominated writer behind the historical thriller “Bridge of Spies.”

The Montecito-based royals will serve as producers alongside Tracy Ryerson, Archewell Productions’ Head of Scripted Content.

The upcoming project particularly hits home for Harry. The prince served in the British Army and undertook two active combat tours in Afghanistan, including deployments to the very Helmand province where “No Way Out” takes place.

Prince Harry And Meghan’s Relationship With Netflix Was Reportedly Strained

Harry and Meghan’s latest Netflix project could allow the couple to breathe a sigh of relief, as previous reports suggested the streamer was “done” with them.

Multiple well-placed sources previously told Variety that the Sussexes’ partnership with Netflix had been “far from a fairy tale.”

Reports claimed Netflix had grown “exhausted” with the couple’s alleged pattern of repackaging the same old story about their royal exit, while the “lackluster” ratings for projects like “With Love, Meghan” reportedly did not help matters.

However, Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria pushed back against the rumors earlier this year, reaffirming the streamer’s commitment to the couple and noting that they still had a robust slate of projects in active development.

Harry and Meghan are reportedly planning a vow renewal ahead of their eighth wedding anniversary on May 19.

Reports suggest the move is linked to a new reality-TV-style project, but doubts have already been raised about how much celebrity pull they still have.

The couple has reportedly fallen out with a slew of Hollywood figures. As a result, any hopes of drawing major attention to the rumored project without celebrity appearances have been labeled “delusional” at best.

Critics have also slammed the idea as “tasteless and crass,” with a source telling Radar Online that it risks “blurring the line between authenticity and performance.”

Meanwhile, Harry and Meghan’s ongoing rift with the royal family has also drawn fresh attention, as reports suggest the Duchess feels she is being made to play by a “different rulebook” than her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton.

Her suspicion appears to stem from how the public and media have treated her over the years, which has reportedly left her feeling like the “most trolled person” in the world.

A source told Star magazine that Harry and Meghan feel like “there’s one set of rules for William and Kate and another for them,” adding that “the resentment over the double standard is bubbling up again.”
