Bonnie Tyler’s spokesperson confirmed earlier this week that the singer had been placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery following emergency intestinal surgery.

It was said on Wednesday (6 May) that the 74-year-old had been rushed to a hospital near her current base in Faro, Portugal, for the procedure and was recuperating.

This was announced on Instagram where a post said that the surgery ‘went well’.

“We know that all of her family, friends and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery,” it read.

And a friend of Tyler, Algarve-based businessman Liberto Mealha, went on to share more details about her condition.

He explained that the ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ singer had begun feeling unwell while performing at a show in London back in March.

Mealha claimed to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha on Friday that Tyler went to a doctor at the time for ‘tests’ but they didn’t ‘detect anything there’.

“She decided to travel to the Algarve, where she began to feel severe abdominal pain,” he continued.

“Two days later, she went to a private hospital, which urgently transferred her to the hospital in Faro because her appendix had burst and she needed emergency surgery.”

The friend claimed that the Welsh singer was being supported at her hospital bedside by her husband, Robert Sullivan.

Mealha claimed: “He’s very grateful to the doctors and nurses at the Faro hospital and believes that if Bonnie had stayed in the United Kingdom she would no longer be here.”

The businessman first met the ‘Holding Out for a Hero’ singer when he opened a popular Albufeira nightclub back in the 1980s.

Issuing an update on Thursday evening, after the news that Tyler had been rushed for the emergency procedure, her spokesperson said: “We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please.

“We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”

The iconic singer, whose real name is Gaynor Hopkins, rose to fame internationally in the 1980s following the release of ‘’Total Eclipse of the Heart’.

Tyler is due to tour Europe later this year to mark the 50th anniversary since the release of her 1976 breakthrough track, ‘Lost in France’ which charted in Europe.

Later this month, she is scheduled to be performing in Malta and Germany.
