It’s like reuniting with an old friend who’s just come back from an adventure, and now you’re left wondering, “What in the name of cosmic alignment have you been up to?” If you’re among the new flock of fans hitching a ride on this nostalgia train, however, you might find yourself lost in a sea of memories, snippets of callbacks, and a vast backstory that spans nine seasons! It can feel a bit like trying to read the stars without a guide—overwhelming and confusing, right?
But fret not! I’ve been entranced by Scrubs for years, and I’ve crafted a concise roadmap just for you—fifteen episodes from the earlier seasons that serve as the perfect gateway into this delightful universe. One of the best things about Scrubs Season 10 is that it brought new fans into the series after nearly 20 years off the air.
If you’re new to Scrubs, though, you might be confused or curious about some of the history that the continuation mentions, yet be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the previous nine seasons.
If so, you’re in the right place! I’ve been obsessed with Scrubs for years, and I’ve picked fifteen episodes (mostly from the first few seasons) that you should watch first.
The original pilot of Scrubs is a must-see, and not just because it kicked things off.
The series begins with JD’s first day as an intern at Sacred Heart Hospital, so if you want insight into who he is today and how his relationships with his friends began, there’s no better place to start.
Pay special attention to JD’s first introduction to Elliot, which begins their on-and-off love story, and to how doe-eyed an intern he once was. (Yes, this episode explains why Carla calls him “Bambi!”)
“My First Day” also establishes JD’s relationship with Dr. Cox, and he has to work through his fear of being hands-on with patients — which makes some of the jokes in Scrubs Season 10 Episode 1 make more sense.
“My Old Lady” was controversial at the time it aired because it featured each of the main interns dealing with the death of a patient for the first time, which didn’t sound like much of a comedic premise.
The episode has some funny parts despite the heavy subject matter — look for a fantasy of JD’s in which he plays Connect Four with the Grim Reaper.
But it is a must-watch for those new to the series because it features one of the most pivotal moments in JD, Turk, and Elliot’s careers: the moment they first realize that sometimes being a doctor means being in the room when someone dies.
These experiences influence how the doctors help the new interns deal with the death of patients on Scrubs Season 10 and beyond. They undoubtedly are part of JD’s determination to help prolong Cox’s life for as long as possible now.
Full disclosure: Scrubs Season 1 Episode 8 is one of my favorites in the entire series. However, that’s not why I included it.
This episode is vital for understanding JD and Cox’s complicated relationship.
JD’s insistence on getting a performance review from Cox ASAP reflects his need for Cox’s approval, which he is still working to reduce, even as a 50-something.
Cox teaches JD one of the most important lessons of his career by explaining why he won’t simply tell him what he wants to hear, and, as a bonus, he does it in his usual monologue style.
One of the longest episodes of Scrubs ever filmed is also one of the most important for understanding JD and Elliot’s relationship.
While a psychiatrist interviews various members of the Sacred Heart staff about their thoughts and feelings about romance, JD and Elliot try and fail to be more than friends.
It all falls apart because of a lack of ability to communicate well and some incompatibility — the same issues they are dealing with as a divorced couple today.
Plus, the ending is powerful and will make you wonder why this episode was not the only time these two tried to become a couple.
It was hard to choose the best episode of Scrubs Season 2 because this season has many of the most moving and funny stories.
But “My Case Study” is vital to filling in the gaps if you aren’t familiar with Scrubs’ history.
JD defies Cox’s desires for the first time here when Cox wants him to rebel against the system by refusing to participate in a competition to see who can come up with the best case study.
Without this important step in his development, JD wouldn’t be able to confront Cox about Cox’s decisions as a patient. Plus, “My Case Study” provides a strong example of who Bob Kelso was and how his legacy continues to influence Sacred Heart Hospital today.
“My New Coat” gives JD his first taste of being in a position of authority, which he needs before he takes his new job on Scrubs Season 10 Episode 1.
Wearing a new lab coat makes JD feel more like a real doctor, and he’s treated more like someone with authority — and responsibility.
JD first learns what it means to be a full doctor rather than an intern, a lesson that carries over into his leadership and teaching style today.
Plus, Elliot has to deal with misogyny after a one-night stand with a doctor, which helps explain how she became the person she is today.
I have to admit that “My Fruit Cups” isn’t one of my favorite episodes, nor have I rewatched it terribly often.
Nevertheless, it’s an important piece of Scrubs history, especially for Elliot.
Although most of the episode deals with Cox choosing between his ex-wife Jordan and an attractive pharmaceutical rep, only to find out he’s a father, the B-plot is more powerful: Elliot’s demanding father wants her to become an OBGYN, and cuts her off financially when she refuses.
Jordan features heavily in this episode, which will help make her return on Scrubs Season 10 Episode 9 more understandable.
Scrubs Season 3 began with Elliot’s determination to become more assertive.
She not only grows into herself here, but also meets Sean — JD’s chief rival for her affection, whom she almost marries before JD ruins it.
Sean will be returning on Scrubs Season 11, so it’s worth watching all of Season 3 to learn about the whole saga.
At the very least, “My Own American Girl” provides a foundation for the Elliot of today and her relationship with Sean.
If you want to understand JD as a mentor to the new crop of interns, you need to go back to his first teaching experience.
During “My White Whale,” JD tries and fails to imitate Cox’s abrasive style, and it damages his relationship with his first set of interns.
Plus, JD having to rely on Sean’s dolphin-training tips to figure out how to teach is hilarious, though it doesn’t influence him as much as the lesson that being like Cox won’t work for him or his students.
And as a bonus, Law & Order: Organized Crime‘s Christopher Meloni guest stars as a pediatrician who butts heads with Cox.
Although “My Clean Break” is about Cox temporarily losing his abrasive edge, it’s also vital for understanding who JD is today.
Throughout the episode, Cox is happy for the first time in a long time, which makes it harder for him to control his students.
The idea that Cox’s authority requires him to be mean is funny, but this episode’s importance lies in the lesson he finally gets through to the residents. If they make errors that hurt or kill patients, he’s responsible as their supervisor.
This heavy responsibility undoubtedly continues to shape JD as he manages interns today.
Turk and Carla get married, but that’s almost beside the point of the Season 3 finale.
Turk almost misses his own wedding because he gets tied up taking care of a patient (not literally; it isn’t a hostage episode, thankfully)
After going to the wrong church and running into George Takei, Turk finally does make it to the altar — and the wedding shows everything right about this couple.
Turk and Carla were a big part of the original series, so it’s hard to choose just one of their episodes; however, their wedding is one of the can’t-miss moments for those who want to know more about their relationship.
Scrubs Season 4 isn’t as relevant to the newer episodes, although it has plenty of funny moments. But “My Office” sets up JD and Elliot’s current relationship nicely.
JD and Elliot are barely on speaking terms because JD ruined Elliot and Sean by declaring his love for her, then decided he didn’t want to be committed to her, and now they have to work together — sound familiar?
“My Office” sets up a season-long arc by having JD and Elliot compete for the Chief Resident position, only to both end up with it.
Their dynamic is very similar to Scrubs Season 10, so this episode helps explain that relationship.
Scrubs Season 5 makes JD an attending physician, which means that he has to teach interns full-time for the first time.
Without a solid understanding of JD’s early experiences as a teacher, it’s difficult to appreciate how much he’s grown or his teaching style today.
“My Intern’s Eyes” also introduces new interns unlike those in Scrubs Season 10, which makes for an interesting comparison.
Technically, these are two separate episodes, but they are really a two-part story around the death of Jill Tracy, a patient who had annoyed Cox since Scrubs’ early days.
When Jill dies suddenly, at first it’s JD who feels guilty, but when her donated organs cause three other patients to die of rabies, Cox completely falls apart.
This two-part story is one of the most emotional in the entire series, and it also dismantles JD’s worship of Cox.
Without having to pull a binge-drinking Cox back from the edge, JD wouldn’t have the experience, strength, or courage to confront Cox about Cox’s medical problems today.
The one-hour Scrubs Season 8 finale is the true ending of the original series.
Scrubs Season 9 was a spinoff disguised as the same show and does not feature JD, making it hard to watch, especially after the brilliant way “My Finale” wraps everything up.
Without spoiling anything, the last few minutes contain a montage of JD’s fantasies about how his future will play out, which will be fun to compare to how his life actually unfolded before and during his return to Sacred Heart.
