Lionel Richie has been hospitalised in the intensive care unit after falling ill after a show in St Louis, Missouri.

The 77-year-old legendary singer checked himself into a hospital to have some tests run and was treated in the intensive care unit, TMZ reports.

The outlet said that he remained in hospital on Monday and he’s hoping to be discharged tomorrow (Tuesday 1 September).

Richie, who is known for a string of hits including Hello, All Night Long, and Dancing on the Ceiling, is currently touring with his Sing a Song All Night Long tour alongside Earth, Wind & Fire.

According to TMZ, during his performance at The Muny on Saturday (29 August), he asked his team if they could bring out a chair for him while performing his final song.

Sources told the outlet that Richie went to hospital as a precautionary measure and doctors were reportedly investigating the possibility that he may be dehydrated.

LADbible has reached out to Richie’s representatives for comment.

In June, Richie cut a concert short after feeling unwell on stage.

During the show, which was the first of his ongoing tour, Richie told fans he felt dizzy.

“When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down,” he told the crowd before taking a seat at a piano to carry on with his performance.

Richie then announced a short, unexpected, intermission after performing at the piano.

Around 40 minutes later, a member of his band came back on stage to tell fans the show was being cut short as Richie was unwell.

“Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well,” saxophonist Dino Soldo said, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

“He won’t be able to continue. Additional information will be available.”

Following that performance, Richie went on to cancel two tour dates, one in Chicago and one in Ohio, but was well enough to get back on stage on 30 June.

At that show, Richie joked that had fans ‘worried there for a minute’ before becoming more candid and telling the audience: “You have no idea what I have been through in the last 24 hours, listening to my friends tell me their advice on what I should be doing.”

He also followed that up with an Instagram post in which he told fans he was ‘doing well’ and thanked them for their support and well-wishes.

In the post, shared on 4 July, he said: “Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. ❤️ I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you. “Pittsburgh and Detroit were an absolute joy. The energy, the dancing, the faces in the crowd… we made real memories together.

“See you in Toronto… let’s party all night long! 🎉”
