Critic’s Rating: 4.1 / 5.0

When it rains at AFC Richmond, it certainly pours.

If Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 hinted at the barrage of obstacles the AFC Richmond women’s team would face in their journey to success, then Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 3 confronts how Ted and the team plan to navigate their first real set of challenges.

First, the women’s team loses yet another key player to a season-ending injury.

The team’s lead sponsor, Pinter & Sons, revokes its financial support after Higgins’ report from Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 1 leaks to the press.

And to add insult to injury, the women’s team’s kits get lost in the mail, sending Keeley into a very understandable — and simultaneously hilarious — spiral.

But in classic Ted Lasso fashion, the episode sees our cast of characters overcome these challenges in a way that is realistic, laugh-out-loud funny, and satisfying.

The episode’s writing feels strongest so far; the jokes are punchy, the physical comedy is enjoyable without being overwrought, and it leans into warmer, heartfelt moments that ground the show’s signature style.

This episode felt like pulling on a cozy sweater (ahem, I mean jumper), with the 47-minute installment feeling more relaxed and effortless as the season settles into itself.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 3 centers on the open tryouts the coaching staff hosts — inspired by a throwaway comment from Alice, much to her chagrin — to find replacement players the team desperately needs.

Now, I was a theater kid — not an athlete — so I love an audition montage. Twist that into a tryout montage for anything sports-related? I still love it just as much.

Here, we meet a few new characters and are reintroduced to a familiar face.

I can’t wait to see more of Lizzie (played by Andor‘s Faye Marsay), a single mother who dazzles the coaches. She shows more than her prowess on the pitch, demonstrating her potential to shine as the leader the team needs.

I’m eager to see how the show deepens her arc, exploring the intersections between parenthood and her surprising new career.

Against the wishes of Coach Chilton and Beard, Ted also accepts Shannon onto the team, who Ted Lasso fans will recognize from past seasons as a Richmondite who crossed paths with Ted in town.

I love when shows bring minor supporting characters into the spotlight, letting them shine and develop into principal characters of their own.

Shannon will clearly be the outsider on the team — talented, but with room to improve to match the skills of her other teammates — but there’s nothing Ted Lasso loves more than an underdog.

Ted’s faith is rarely misplaced.

And even though Dani Rojas’s sister, Maria, unfortunately doesn’t subscribe to her brother’s “Football is life” mantra, it was wonderful to get a sweet, unexpected callback to this fan-favorite character.

I hypothesized that the relationship between Coach Chilton and Rebecca might create the most friction this season, but I believe I stand corrected: the tension between Coach Chilton and the team’s new striker, Gemma, is certainly giving the pair a run for their money.

And is that a hint of… chemistry I spot between them?

Their animosity and begrudging respect will certainly create interesting team and interpersonal dynamics in the episodes to come.

The episode also boasts a few important, poignant moments that are delivered without being heavy-handed.

I love that Rebecca reminds the Pinter & Sons CEO that while it’s crucial for young girls to grow up with the opportunity to see strong women athletes on the pitch, it’s equally important for young boys to grow up never knowing a world in which that isn’t the norm.

And in a moment of understandable frustration, Keeley reminds Roy that each team’s expectations are not the same — and that he should examine his underlying assumption that they are.

“Women don’t get friendlies,” Keeley remarks. “We either succeed, or we fail; that is it.”

It’s a critical reminder that women earn respect by consistently exceeding the expectations set for them, without being granted the same affordances as their male counterparts.

It’s also endearing to see Roy try to flatter Keeley throughout the episode, even though he always misses the mark slightly on what she needs from his support.

That’s why it’s incredibly satisfying when he pulls through for her in the sweetest way possible, recruiting Phoebe — a character who really deserves to be used in the remainder of the season to her full potential — to lend her crafting skills and “pizzazz” to create new kits right before the match.

It ends the hour with the unexpected, heartwarming touch that reminds viewers why Roy, in all his gruffness, is still the one for our girl Keeley.

The two MVPs of the episode go to the women’s match commentators — please, I beg, put them in every episode — and the uncontested queen of Richmond, Mae.

Mae is all the evidence you need that what Ted and the team are doing matters.

Watching her light up at the women’s match, a moment she claims she had been waiting for her whole life, made me a little misty!

Mae’s excitement mirroring Phoebe’s is a perfect reminder that fighting for this team’s success, despite obstacles and naysayers, is as much about creating a new world for the young as it is about honoring everyone who dreamed of that world for themselves.

The season is just heating up and starting to hit its stride — and I can’t wait to see what’s next for our growing women’s team.
