LEARN MORE

Perez Hilton‘s family has been providing updates about the celebrity blogger via his website, but his younger sister, Barbara Lavandeira, has decided to offer more insight into the tragic event that led to Hilton’s hospitalization.

Barbara was at her brother’s home at the time of the incident and shared what she witnessed. She also provided updates on Hilton’s recovery and offered insight into what the blogger had been going through in the days leading up to his suicide attempt.

On the night of August 4, authorities and first responders received multiple emergency calls reporting a man harming himself live on TikTok. They responded to the home of Mario Lavandeira, more popularly known as Perez Hilton, in Miami, Florida, and the celebrity blogger was taken away in an ambulance, as previously reported by The Blast.

Hilton has since been confined in a hospital for treatment, and his family shares some updates via his blog. His sister, Barbara Lavandeira, is speaking out for the first time in a lengthy phone interview with Page Six.

Barbara was at her brother’s home on the night of August 4, and she recalled becoming concerned after Hilton locked himself in his room, which was out of character. She was able to get into the room and discovered her brother naked in the bathroom holding a box cutter. He had multiple cuts and was covered in blood.

“What I can say with certainty is that I didn’t recognize my brother when I looked at him. I saw it in his eyes. They didn’t look the same. Then, a split second later, he smiled at me. It felt like I was staring at someone else,” Barbara shared.

Elsewhere during the interview, Barbara shed light on Hilton’s mental state in the days leading up to his attempted suicide.

In late July, Hilton approached Barbara and their mother and opened up about feeling depressed. “He had felt empty, hopeless, and like he was a burden on everyone,” adding that he confessed to taking the painkillers left over from his recent surgery.

Barbara then suggested getting psychiatric help, which Hilton agreed to. He was discharged after a few days of evaluation and treatment for “severe depression.”

Hilton appeared to be doing better after his short hospital stay and attended regular therapy sessions. On the day of his live TikTok, Barbara said Hilton had “completed an intake call for an intensive outpatient program and was supposed to begin outpatient group therapy the following week.”

Barbara said his brother sustained cuts to the face and other areas of his body, but didn’t elaborate further. As of now, it isn’t known whether the injuries would have lasting effects.

As previously reported by The Blast, a source claimed that it will take “months, maybe years” for the blogger to fully recover.

Visitations are limited at this time, and the family is not certain when Hilton will be released. “I don’t want to offer a timeline or make promises about when he might come home. Right now, the most important thing is that he receives the treatment he needs and isn’t rushed through any part of his recovery,” Barbara said.

The Blogger’s Children Are In Good Hands

Hilton agreed to give his mother, Teresita, temporary custody of his three children, 13-year-old Mario, 11-year-old Mia, and 8-year-old Mayte, all of whom were born via a surrogate, per The Blast.

Barbara clarified the “false information” circulating online, saying that the kids have never been taken away from her brother. The current custody arrangement is also temporary, and their priority is keeping the children surrounded by people who love them amid the family crisis.

“Our mother is caring for them, and our entire family is helping provide the love, stability, privacy, and professional support they need,” Barbara said.

Barbara acknowledged some of the “painful” comments that are being said about his brother and understands that some people may “hate” Hilton due to his past. However, she is asking for respect, especially when it comes to the children.

“I’m not asking anyone to forget or excuse any of that. I also understand that some people will always believe he hasn’t done enough, despite his efforts,” she said. However, she also believes that Hilton shouldn’t be “reduced forever to the worst things,” especially since he has since admitted to his faults and worked on himself.

“Whatever anyone thinks about Mario, his children and our mother are innocent. They shouldn’t be punished or tormented because of how people feel about him,” Barbara said.

Hilton’s family continues to post updates about his health on the blogger’s website.
