A surprising link between Lupita Nyong’o and New York mayor Zohran Mamdani‘s family has resurfaced through his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair.
Nyong’o starred in Nair’s Disney 2016 drama “Queen of Katwe,” which tells the true story of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi.
Lupita Nyong’o’s connection to Zohran Mamdani’s family goes back to the 2016 Disney film “Queen of Katwe,” which was directed by his mother, acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair.
The movie also starred David Oyelowo and Madina Nalwanga and tells the story of Phiona Mutesi, a 10-year-old girl growing up in Kampala, Uganda, with her mother, Harriet, and siblings. Phiona’s life begins to open up after she meets Robert Katende, an engineer-turned-missionary who teaches children chess through a local sports ministry.
She quickly takes to the game. Despite having little formal education, Phiona starts beating older and more experienced players. She eventually earns the chance to compete beyond her neighborhood and see a very different future for herself.
Almost a decade before he became mayor of New York, Mamdani took on multiple responsibilities of his own on “Queen of Katwe.” The then-aspiring musician served as a music supervisor and was also credited as a third assistant director under his full name, Zohran Kwame Mamdani.
His musical involvement went even further. Before entering politics, Mamdani performed under the name Young Cardamom and collaborated with Ugandan artist HAB.
The pair’s “#1 Spice” appears on the movie’s soundtrack, while Mamdani also received songwriting credits for “Kanda [Chap Chap]” and “Malu Anjalan.”
For Mamdani’s mom, “Queen of Katwe” offered a chance to put an African story on screen without centering the wars, famine, and other hardships that have often dominated Hollywood portrayals of the continent. Speaking at a Q&A for the film, Nair said she wanted to capture the “joy and the dignity of everyday people” facing extraordinarily difficult circumstances.
Her commitment to authenticity also shaped the production. Nair spent time with the real people behind the story, including Phiona’s mother, Harriet, and visited places where the family had lived after being evicted.
The filmmaker said those experiences revealed Harriet’s “formidable courage” and helped shape the screenplay. Nair also cast children from Katwe and neighboring communities, describing them as constant teachers during production. Filming took place in the real communities depicted in the story.
Nyong’o was also part of the same Q&A session, and she praised the film’s focus on a young African girl with an ambitious dream rather than the dictators, wars, and famine often depicted in stories about the continent.
Nyong’o saw Phiona’s journey as a lesson for younger audiences about discovering a passion and pursuing it wholeheartedly. She noted that Phiona could never have predicted chess would transform her family’s circumstances or eventually turn her into an icon in Uganda.
Preparing to play Harriet also brought Nyong’o face-to-face with Phiona’s real mother. She spent an afternoon observing and speaking with her, describing Harriet as grounded, reserved and warm. The “Black Panther” star said she particularly wanted her performance to capture Harriet’s practicality, sacrifices and refusal to compromise her principles.
Nearly a decade after “Queen of Katwe,” Nyong’o publicly backed Mamdani during his 2025 campaign for New York City mayor. In an Instagram post, the actress revealed that she had actually known him since he was 14, when she interned at Nair’s production company, Mirabai Films.
Nyong’o recalled the teenager as “present, warm, and respectful,” adding that she detected “no trace of entitlement.” She said those qualities remained when their paths crossed professionally years later. Nyong’o praised Mamdani for staying calm under pressure and navigating the American and Ugandan cultures represented on set.
His eventual move into politics did not surprise her. Having grown up with a politician for a father, Nyong’o acknowledged the difficulty of that path and argued that Mamdani’s leadership skills translated well to public office. “I strongly believe that Zohran Mamdani possesses the personality, skill, and temperament to be an excellent mayor of New York City,” she wrote, revealing she had voted for him.
