A star of the latest Spider-Man film has opened up about the discussion which has been sparked by the film’s unusual ending.

Jacob Batalon took on the role of Ned Leeds in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has also seen Tom Holland return to the role for the fourth time in a solo Spider-Man movie, as well as playing the character in a supporting role in numerous Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

And needless to say, massive spoiler alert for the ending of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in this article, in case you’d missed the controversy online.

This movie picks up after the end of the previous Spider-Man: No Way Home, released in 2021, in which Dr Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, cast a spell which erased Peter Parker from everyone’s memories in a bid to protect the people closest to him.

The latest instalment sees Spider-Man grappling with the consequences of this, with his best friend Ned, played by Batalon, having a moment at the end in which it appears that he might recognise his old friend.

Peter meets Ned in a store, and Ned recognises him as someone he had met at an earlier party, however the pair then shake hands, before then slipping into a special handshake they had when they were friends, and Ned asking ‘Peter?’ before the film ends.

But of course, whether he actually does remember Peter may not be confirmed, and discussions have since taken off about the scene.

Was it his memories coming back? Was it just some sort of repressed muscle memory?

Batalon has now opened up about with The Hollywood Reporter, saying: “It seems a little open-ended. What if it’s just muscle memory? What if he just remembers that handshake but nothing else about Peter?

“What if he just repeats ‘Peter’ because that’s what Peter says his name is in that moment? I don’t know.”

He added: “I feel like it’s really up to interpretation for everyone. There could be a slight glint or little glimmer [of recognition], if you will.”

Some fans have even suggested that some of Dr Strange’s magic has rubbed off on Peter and that the handshake was somehow magically charged.

But of course, fans will just have to wait until the next instalment to find out for certain.

As for the movie itself, Spider-Man: Brand New Day saw big success at the box office, making over a billion dollars, or around £742 million, at the box office.

And the ambiguous ending is not the only part of the movie which has got fans talking either, as the customary post-credits scene has also sparked a myriad of theories about the future of the character.

The post-credits scene sees a tracker for Spider-Man locating him, seemingly going towards Earth before panning past and heading into outer space.

This understandably left a lot of people confused as to how Spider-Man ended up in space, with some suggesting this could be a setup for the next Avengers movies.

Others even though it might be a way to bring in other iterations of Spider-Man, including Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire, who both played the character in previous outings.
